I will confess to only reading the first six chapters in the first book. (Lord only knows how many chapters there are.) But let me assure you, it seemed like a whole lot more. Two characters, our intrepid H and uninterested h, meet, then with no chemistry between them whatsoever, he proceeds to chase her endlessly, goofily, and senselessly, round and round and round. While our h, apparently sensing the distinct lack of chemistry, attempts to kick him away with both feet, at every opportunity. And he presents her with many, many opportunities. She does everything but spit in his face, but, like a well trained circus seal, or a lost puppy starved for love, he just keeps coming back for more. I cant say it doesnt have a great hea, since I held out long as I could, but not to the end. But I can say I have learned from my mistake. The other reviewers say the rest of the set is as bad as the first book. Now, I will trust them, and take their word for it.
The first book, Prelude to a Wedding is Paul's story, who is finally to the stage of wanting more then work and making a great career, and wanting a complete fulfilling life, with love, family and loved ones around them. . Paul loves his family, but had focused on being successful in everything his grandfather didn't want. His grandfather wanted Paul to go to an Ivy League College, to become a lawyer and come into his firm. Paul picked a college close to home, focused on appraising old toys and keeping the kid at heart alive, no stuffy courtrooms for him. Never wanted a strict day to day job, but one to keep him unscheduled and on the go when he wanted to. But, that also meant that he wasn't predictable for any women in his life, leaving him with a broken engagement and heart. He was good in his appraisal business, and very successful and worked hard at being so, but not to the eye of someone who needed schedules and a life plan, and that is when meeting Bette, he knew she was one that he wanted, and wanted to change her mind about him. The story has a lot of good humor and tender moments as we get to know the real Paul, his family, friends and the too structured, stick to a routine Bette.
The second book, The Wedding Party, is Michael and Tris's story. Michael coming to terms with Tris all grown up, but he thought she was still hung up on Grady, who never thought of Tris as anything other then like a little sister. Paul and Bette's wedding causes the two to realize that there was more for them, other then friends an Tris finally realizing Grady was just a young girls crush and that Michael was always the one she really turned too and shared all the good things in her life, as well as the bad. Both just didn't know how to get past just being friends. This book had a number of hard to face past realities and the struggle that friends sometime having trouble of going into a love relationship. A lot of hard struggles that was heart wrenching, yet endearing and sweet. I felt Michael and Tris's story was a little short changed, as their wedding was in the 3rd story and IMO, glossed over, as Grady's story was already hinted at during their story and Michael and Tris wedding started the beginning of the 3rd story on Grady Wedding.
Grady was the good looking, successful businessman, plenty of money and who went through women like water though swim trunks. Yet, there is a lot more to Grady then the handsome outside, put few knew or seen. His dating relationships were shallow, and never letting anyone in or close, and he knew how to get what he wanted and always got what he wanted. Until after seeing one friend after another find love and happiness, he longed for that connection too, but not knowing how and frustrated when meeting Leslie, she kept him at arms length, and quick at saying NO. Finding out the true Grady was heartwarming, and seeing him grow, and face what his childhood had to do with how he faced life and relationships.
What was intriguing was that Leslie thought she could help Grady to learn about being a friend, but she was hiding from her past too and always helping others find what they needed, because she thought it was not meant for her ever to have.
Each story gave great insight to each character, that it even had me looking at why I handle some relationships I do and to realize that hurts help build walls,, and it's hard to take those walls down and let others in, at the risk of hurting our hearts. But that's life, that's how we grow and can have compassion for others going through those rough spots too.
This is just a great series to read, learn, love, laugh and cry sad and happy tears and look for more.
