Rachel doesn't disappoint. JoJo Castle is a relatable heroine, at once gutsy and filled with fear thanks to a traumatic and personal mugging. I found myself identifying with her in that, while I haven't completely given up on being the bride, I'm past the starry-eyed phase and aware it may not happen. That's why it was a treat to see her try on the dress and especially the veil (I don't know why, but I'm a sucker for veils). I also loved how much JoJo loved Hearts Bend and wanted to give back. She's the furthest thing from a country groupie and as Buck finds, that's as refreshing as chill December wind.
As for Buck, well, who couldn't fall for him? My interest in music kept me engaged in his arc, but his heart kept me engaged in him. I should be so lucky to find a man who'd give up a European tour to help his mom through cancer and get a chance with the woman he's always loved. I also loved the scene where he and Jo write the pageant song together, and the scenes where they bonded over things as simple as hot chocolate and fries. (Never tried the combo..mental note...)
The Christmas setting enchanted me from the first, especially inside peeks at things like the decorated Wedding Shop. Rachel also added a unique element with the Castle family "holiday curse," and the fact that God can and does redeem that sort of thing. I actually wanted more of that, since I loved the story of Mrs. Castle getting to live in her dream home so soon after one of those tragedies.
Some of the plot got a little wearing, especially when JoJo flatly refused, several times, to let go of fear and consider letting Buck in her life, let alone marrying him. Inwardly, I was screaming, "Girl, this guy is a PRINCE and if you don't want him, I'm coming in there!" I understand exactly how the mugging would've influenced that, but I've never been a fan of characters who dither. That said, I still thoroughly enjoyed my latest visit to Hearts Bend and want more ASAP.
Sometimes novellas are rushed or the narration feels a bit heavy because so much has to happen in a shorter word count. That was not the case with The Wedding Dress Christmas. The author did a great job with the pacing. Also, the story had a deeper layer emphasizing the power of love overcoming fear, which I thought was poignant and spot on for an inspirational Christmas novella. Nicely done, Rachel Hauck!
To say I loved this book is an understatement, but I am at a loss for words. I immediately liked Jojo and it was wonderful to return to Heartsbend, Tennessee. It is the perfect setting for this latest addition to The Wedding Collection.
This is a novella, so just 131 pages, but it is well developed and not rushed. The characters are wonderful and their story is swoon worthy.
Rachel Hauck has a way with story telling that gets me every time. I start her books and can't put them down until I finish. As with many of her other books, I'm sure I will re-read this story many times.
If you like a book that gives you warm fuzzy feelings, then you will like this book. It is a good Christmas romance that is enhanced by the special wedding dress.
If you pick up a copy, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
