Review
"What beautiful, concise, powerful, and illuminating writing... A real gift to the field."-- John Steiner, co-Founder of the transpartisan Bridge Alliance
"Fogg and Greene compellingly expose the roots of political polarization in the United States, shattering common misconceptions and blame-pointing. If this was required reading in civics classes, the US political system would be better for it."-- Devon Walker, co-Founder of Run for America
"We love simple solutions and that is how we've become Wedged. Our country is not simple. But it is worth our loving attention. Wedgedgently reveals how we share more values and priorities in the USA than we believe. And Wedgedoutlines where we can begin working together, to restore our confidence in each other and the improved future we all want."-- Debilyn Monileaux, Managing Partner, Living Room Conversations, and President, Coffee Party USA
"Wedged provides a voice of commonsense and logic, blending practical advice and applied psychology to illustrate the process of political manipulation at a very personal level. The book's advice on how to recognize this process and escape from it is extremely valuable and offers hope for the future."-- Stephen R Balzac, Professor, Organizational Psychology, Wentworth Institute of Technology, author, Organizational Psychology for Managers
About the Author
He spent four years as an operations and management consultant, improving organizational effectiveness and culture for a number of clients across North America. He's been blogging and writing essays on improving American democracy since entering college, but his greatest influence for working on Wedged was his realization that those that disagreed with him had much more to teach him than those that already agree. He believes everyone can adopt this mindset and become hungry to learn from each other in political dialogue.
Erik lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is co-Founder of Something to Consider, focused on improving American political dialogue by undermining the destructive mindsets that ail politics in the US.
Nat's political views have evolved significantly over the years through discussions with the many great people he as been fortunate enough to encounter. He has lived, worked and studied in Asia, Europe, and North America and traveled to over 50 countries and territories.
Nat has noticed that people will often get upset or shut down when engaged in political or policy discussion. Frustrated at this state of affairs Nat figured there were two options open to him: give up completely or look to apply his analytical and problem solving skills to help change how we conduct political dialogue.
Nat has a background in Engineering and Business management. He has studied at Oxford University, Cambridge University, and Harvard Business School. He is the CEO of Stroud International, Chairman of MidTide Media, and co-Founder of Something to Consider. Nat lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts with his wife and four children.

About the authors

Nat is a business leader, author, and champion of great problem-solving. He helps smart people make radically better decisions and all his activities and interests are tied to this mission. Nat helped found and run Stroud international and is the author of several books. Wedged is a look into some of the drivers behind political dysfunction in the US, Stop Guessing explores the behaviors of great problem-solvers and Variable Analysis is a deep dive into the world of technical problem solving.
Nat's upbringing ingrained an intense drive to help people develop an Abundant Thinking mindset, understanding that more is always possible. Nat was born and raised in Hong Kong, during a period of immense growth in social mobility, influenced by not only dreamers but also by those looking to push educational and professional boundaries. His father, a professor of material science, taught him about problem-solving at a young age by taking him around the city and helping him to explore what was broken and why.
Nat remains inspired by the belief that anything is possible and has chosen to dedicate his life to productively challenging the conventional limits of the status quo. He takes an approach that is hands-on, data-driven, and follows a rigorous process to break constraints. Nat's curiosity, determination, and passion extends beyond his work to every corner of his life. He enjoys spending time with his family, and learns a great deal from his children, who are not bound by the same preconceived notions and experiences that constrain many adults. Nat, his wife, and four children reside in Marblehead, Massachusetts by the ocean, a symbol of infinite possibility that inspires him.
Nat has a Masters of Engineering from Oxford University and studied design, manufacturing and management at Cambridge University, in addition to executive education coursework in Harvard Business School's Owner/President Management program."

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book brings a novel approach to a commonly recognized problem in American politics, pairs it with rigorous analysis, and presents it in a way that is highly readable while respecting the intelligence of its audience. It applies the basic logic of evolution (what works gets done more) to politicians and media outlets, and follows the data to its conclusion: turning issues into tribal markers, where a right answer induces a sense of belonging and a wrong answers produces righteous offense, is the winning strategy for getting votes and viewers. If you don't do this, you don't last long enough to make an impact. If you do do this, you self-perpetuate. The current end state is a nation that is convinced that half of it is an existential threat to itself, and trying to practice effective statesmanship can be indistinguishable from betraying the tribe.
This is all in the first section, where the theory is laid out. I haven't gotten deeply into the case studies, and I expect to feel discomfort, because it is the nature of the project to be ecumenical about its deconstruction of sacred cows. The point, however, is not that no side is wrong, or both sides are equally right, but that effective governance requires us to be able to consider different policy options, expose them critically to the light of available data, and have a conversation with our fellow citizens, instead of a battle with our sworn enemies.
This even-handedness may be the point where the book's logic is weakest: I think I know enough about America's political history, more and less recent, to be able to make an argument that there are differences in degree and kind between the two current camps: in how they engage in this behavior, the attractiveness of the instincts they appeal to, how readily they have and do resort to this behavior, etc.
Conceding that this point is mine to make, however, and not the book's, loops back to its most convincing argument for its own existence: fixing this problem requires nothing from those who use the tactics described (who, after all, are caught in inexorable evolutionary logic). Instead, it hopes that by pointing out what these tactics look and feel like, we can be immunized to them, and by sharing that with others, we can develop herd immunity. The result, it is fondly to be wished, is a different sort of environment, with a different dominant strategy.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOverall: The authors' diagnosis is spot on. I started this read a bit skeptical as I was expecting a bit of a pandering "can't we all get along" or "both sides have valid points" treatment of the issues. What I learned instead is that most of these issues aren't in fact real issues at all, including some that I have to admit I thought I held "strong views" on.
The good:
* The central premise is well presented with plenty of data and a clear explanation
* Several insightful charts that actually changed my understanding of some issues (e.g., income distribution)
* The quotes cleverly interspersed throughout the book are a great way to "make it real"
The shortcomings with this book are not related to what it contains, but rather what it omits. I would have liked to see more:
* "How wedge issues die" the marriage equality issue is clear, but this felt like a common one to me. Where else have these issues been diffused, and by the "disengaged middle" not by victorious participants though litigation?
* The areas of agreement ranges in depth; the gun control and abortion data does a great job showing that these issues are not what they appear--I would have liked to see more of this on the other case studies
But above all, the biggest thing I'd like to see is more of is "what can I do about this". It almost felt like a let down that after 200+ pages of detailed diagnosis, the prescribed remedy was a mere three pages that basically said "Start with yourself and be skeptical of wedging." While a completely valid (and non-trivial) point, I would have liked more on how to meaningfully engage in moving to a better, non-wedged place ("The Righteous Mind" was particularly helpful for me here). I hope the authors take this idea forward as I think that is what it will really take to get "the disengaged middle" back into action!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI don't read politics books very often either (Jon Stewart and the early Franken years...). The partisan rhetoric in most is too much to handle. Wedged is a data based, thought provoking alternative to the typical politics and gives me a plausible explanation of what I perceived as a degradation in the quality of our government in the past 20 years. As a bonus, it makes extremists like Ann Coulter's popularity make sense: the only people left in the political conversation (and cable news viewership) are the extremes. The rest of us are fed up with political conversations on low priority issues none of us believe Washington can actually fix.
And there's the rub: my dropping out of the dialogue and the elections is part of the problem. Well, me and the other 250 million Americans who make up the middle ground and share largely common views on issues made to look like warzones by career politicians, fox news, and msnbc. Abortion, guns, email scandals, witch-hunting, and random rhetoric about social security dominate the podium and the airwaves, while education, real action on the economy and jobs, and the dysfunction of the government are going untended.
Overall I enjoyed the read, though I find myself craving more in the way of actionable answers and what else we can do (as another reviewer suggested) to provide incentives for politicians and media who are focusing on the vast common ground, instead of the polarizing minority opinions on the polarizing minority of "wedge issues."
Still, I'm changing my personal approach. Next time politics comes up casually, I'll ask someone a politically loaded question that we're likely to agree on the answer to - this book provided plenty of examples. I might even register to vote again...

judit figarolaReviewed in Spain on November 25, 20201.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Edition, the worst edition I've ever seen: don't buy it
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe content itself it is not bad, however the edition looks like it has been done by a three-years boy. The text is not justified and not even the photographies are in the right place. Horrible. Moreover, the text font seems the one from a comic. Horrible, again
John VesseyReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 24, 20155.0 out of 5 stars A commonsense analysis of the polarisation in American politics, and the harm it is causing.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAs an Englishman understanding the nature of American politics has always been a challenge, not least most recently as the country seems to be languishing in dysfunction. The current polarisation of politicians and the political commentariat does this great nation no favours. Fogg and Greene's refreshing study (WEDGED) is remarkable in that its core message is immediate, concise and pressing. The data around which their case is shaped is impressive and carefully assembled. This Englishman wishes our American friends all speed in rebuilding the political middle ground. John Vessey. 24th November 2015. Paperback.
Alan CruickshankReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 20155.0 out of 5 stars A really well written and frank look at American politics, and how it's got to where it is.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA really well written and frank look at American politics, and more broadly why so many people are now disengaged with politics altogether. I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in politics (or interested in why they feel so disengaged with it - especially when the main job of politicians should be to engage people). This will explain how that's happened and what needs to happen to change that.
