"This was so much more than a coming-of-age novel. It's about a tired, broken community struggling to come together for one final showdown, proving their past battles were worth something. Through flashbacks we see the inner turmoil and buried secrets of the older generation. The young generation is focused through the eyes of the main character, Annie, a teenage girl who's wary of following the well-trodden path of 'choose a career; choose a family; choose a washing machine, a car,' etc. But then she discovers that her own life, her entire world, was a web of lies deftly woven by her father for her protection. This utter betrayal is accompanied by larger dangers to the island itself, and Annie's conception of everything she thought she knew shatters completely. She is faced with a world and identity that is entirely alien to her. This is a dark, 'new weird' fiction novel - part contemporary fantasy, part Lovecraftian horror, it has monsters, demons, ghosts, ancient gods - and some of them are real." - Goodreads Reviewer
