From the Inside Flap

A member of Rabbi Small's congregation dies a mysterious death during the worst hurricane Barnard's Crossing has seen in years. When the suspect turns out to be a troubled but likable young man, Rabbi Small comes to his aid -- drenching himself in a decidedly non-kosher mystery involving prescription drugs, real estate shenanigans, and possibly, pre-meditated murder . . . --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Once again the rabbi is in trouble with the president of the temple. Kaplan wants the temple to have a retreat center. Rabbi Small says Jews don't retreat, they participate in the world. I always enjoy the rabbi's explications of the essence of Judaism.

But most of all I like the rabbi. He tends to solve social problems by consulting Talmudic law. He walks with a scholarly stoop, even though he's still under forty. He makes no attempt to impress, and is generally rather rumpled. And he's always ready to help people, whether they're in his congregation or not.

This willingness gets him involved in an interesting case. An old man dies due to a mix-up between two prescriptions. Was it just a mistake, or was it murder? And if murder, who caused the mix-up? It's up to the rabbi to figure out what happened, because his old friend the police chief is suspicious of all the wrong people.

The plot is rich in temple politics, personal conflicts, and slick business dealings – peppered with a little romance and a lot of Jewish philosophy.

I love these books.

As usual, a great mystery by author Harry Kemelman. Not only entertaining but educational. A great cultural look at the Jewish viewpoint of other religions through the minds of his characters. Thanks, Mr. Kemelman.

I read all the Rabbi Small books decades ago as they came out and now I'm re-reading them on my Kindle. My memory of them is faint so it's like reading them for the first time.

So far this is the one I've enjoyed most and I've enjoyed all of them. The story is a little more twisty but it's easy to follow and he's made the characters a bit more interesting than the others.

I read about the Rabbi Small books about a month (2/14) ago and I started reading them and I am finishing up the last two (there are 13 of them) I will be sad when they are done. They mix mystery and good story telling with Rabbi Small explaining his roll as a rabbi.

I always love Rabbi Small! I read all his books when I was in high school. This kindle addition is faithfully rendered. I will enjoy reading it again and again.

I have lived in a Jewish community and socialize with many Jews, but this novel still taught me a lot about Judaism I didn't know. Great.

Kemelman stories are alway good, easy to read. All the characters are well-drawn, easy to believe, and the plots are always different.

I picked up this author for its combination of plot in a Judaic context. I went on with the reading more because of my motivation than the draw of the plot really
