I buy these mobiles regularly as I use them for my art. I would say that I have purchased at least 20 of these mobiles in silver. I create large paper filigree designs to hang from these mobiles. I even bought tools and supplies to make my own mobiles and the price that you pay to get the Kikkerland mobile is so much easier and cost effective than making my own. I'm sure if I had endless time to learn how to create the perfect mobile I could do it cheaper but it is not a skill I need to master thanks to these mobiles and the superb price that you can get them for.
I am a Kikkerland mobile lover forever. I have yet to find a product that comes close to doing what Kikkerland does at the low prices that the mobiles carry. I'll be honest and admit that I have never used these for photos but I can only imagine they are perfect for photos.
Update! 1-18-2017 - I desperately wanted to use this to hang a few ornaments from my collection, but, as shipped, it was way too wimpy to hold any weight at all. However... If you take .047 Music Wire (you can get it at Hobby Lobby much cheaper than Amazon) and affix one each to the two main supports, it will hold a decent amount of weight without bending into a useless 'U' shape. I used tiny thermal plastic beads to afix the wires. But, honestly, I think if I had just used a few pieces of hvy duty clear packing tape it would have worked equally well. It hangs a bit low, but that will be easily corrected by snipping the hanger shorter and bending the end into a hook. Now I am very pleased with it, and may buy another for my bedroom. (I replace the nut holding the overhead light shade with Westinghouse 849-1066-3334 Lighting 70256 Antique Brass Decorative Female Loops. It worked great!)
Your pictures had better be whisper thin. I love the concept, I just wish it was more robust.
I wanted to make a very light weight mobile for my baby's room using paper cutouts and light wire AND for a good price. I was not feeling up to making the entire mobile from scratch, so this product provided an inexpensive base structure to work from. I added in 16 fishing swivels (which is enough for one swivel at each major connection) to enable more movement. Without the fishing swivels the two arches kept laying flat against each other and afterward they now sit more at 90 degrees to each other which is what i wanted. I also lengthened the distance between the two main arches at the top and thus giving a better layering effect and dimension to the items attached at the bottom. I attached to the clips woodland creature and Mr. Foxy Fox cut outs that I found on amazon.. in fact there are a number of party supply decorations that would work great for mobiles. I then placed cut out leaves on the back of each animal to add interest. (I made the leaves myself using a paper cutter.) I also stuck some cut out leaves into the top of each triangle to bring color upwards and add further interest. (I could only do this because the coiled wire is tight enough to hold onto cardstock esp if used multiple layers.) I did not put any sounds into the mobile, but if you want you can also add in little chime bells, tiny jingle bells, etc. I opened the top loop and made it into a hook for easier hanging. Plus hanging was a breeze since the weight of the mobile is so low. Overall, I am very pleased with the final results and this product.
The concept of this mobil is great, but it does not rotate that well. since the 2 main arms are not hooked in place they end up becoming parallel of each other which makes whatever you have clipped to them laying on top of each other. Also if you have anything that is 2 sided the individual arms do not rotate themselves, so the only way you can see 2 sides is when the whole mobil rotates. I put fishing swivels on each joint and it has made it work much better.
"We hung ours using fishing line (6 lb test) from the ceiling hanging from a thumb tack. I didn't understand why a couple reviewers talked about having to use wallet sized pictures, unless maybe they have 4 foot ceilings. I also didn't understand the review about the clips denting or marking the pictures - aren't pictures like $.14 cents a copy these days online?!? While we're on the subject of bad reviews, I also don't get the one about the mobile not rotating well - with just a little bit of air movement (AC/Heat) ours will gracefully move around". My teen loves it, and just asked me to replace the current pictures with new ones. Great bang for the buck! As I finish writing this review, I will buy another one for myself.
review copied and adapted from "By Phatboy Boogaloo on November 21, 2011" since she/he said prettyy much what I wanna say ;)
*Note that this does not come with the cards: but I like that you can change out the mobile with creative items of your own (pictures, felt animals, alphabet cards, etc. ) It is a little more flimsy than I expected, but it worked for me and looks cute.
The reason this is only a three star: Mine arrived with a missing clip. Each extension has a clothespin type clip (which is very easy to hang things on). This is where you attach the cards. One of mine was missing. Rather than return mine (because it was being made as a gift) I was able to use jewelry making tools to move the center clip to the missing spot so it was symmetrical.
I was hesitant at first after reading some negative reviews, but I went ahead and bought this anyway. I'm glad I did, It was perfect! I used this mobile to hang painted feathers for my daughter's nursery mobile,
