1.) Very easy to assemble right out of the box. The items comes in three separate pieces (top shaft, bottom shaft, and guard). The only concern I have is the plastic locking mechanism use to join/secure the shaft.
2.) Starting was easy. As mentioned in other reviews, the MOST IMPORTANT thing to do is follow the directions: keep the weedeater horizontal, press the primer 10 times, pull the rip cord, and then wait 30 seconds before touching the throttle.
Make sure you use ear protection (it is very loud) and eye protection when using this device. Prolonged use without ear protection will disturb your ears and cause ringing for a few minutes after you shut-down.
When it is running it runs smoothly and starts on the first pull after it's been warmed up.
As for handling, I don't find it too heavy, but it is very unbalanced. I have used other trimmers where the balance point is very near the caryy/steadying handle and can be easily operated with only the throttle hand in those instances when you need to use your other hand to hold a branch or other item out of the way. The balance point on this model is behind the throttle about 2-3 inches in front of the motor. Because of this, if for whatever reason you have to let go with the "steadying" hand, the trimmer head end will swing up while still spinning at full speed.
The trimmer line is very easy to load...that is the only good thing about it. Refills are expensive. $10-$12 for 12 of them, I usually go through 4 or 5 of them every time I trim my yard, which only takes about 30 minutes. I have tried making my own refills from a spool of trimmer line, but it seems to break even faster than the ones that are specifically made for this trimmer. Today the line kept breaking so often and quickly that I gave up...I was spending 3 times as much time changing line than I was actually trimming my yard. Maybe the brand of line I am using is no good. Regardless, a bump-feed head would be much better on this model.
In all it's not a BAD product, it could just be better with some minor improvements.
