In this perfectly-paced tale, you don’t know where your going when you start, which is half the fun of the thrill ride, but before you know it, you are taken away along with the characters where two worlds collide, all bets are off, and anything can happen. I absolutely love an unpredictable, well-crafted story with an engaging plot, and well-developed characters that are placed in life-altering predicaments. TWBOBL is such a story.
Flawed characters, Sarah, Shelby, Ricky, and Henry are whisked away from Blinney Lane to the world of Farwin Wood where they tangle with giant lords of the land, tame creatures unheard of, and sample treats known only to this hidden world. To find out what happens when they get there … you have to read the book.
It is important to me as a reader that I see these characters as if they are on the big screen as the words strung together without this end in mind mean nothing. Damara achieves this effect with masterful descriptions that are woven into the text along with action never bogging down the narrative. The following passage featuring Ranthrop, is a wonderful example. “Ranthrop Groslivo, Lord of the Southland Swamps and Groslivo Stronghold, let out a low growling moan as he slung his bare feet off the fur covered bed and set them on the cool stone floor of his room. His brains felt as though they were swirling inside of his skull underneath his mop of long light brown curls. He rubbed one of his mighty hands across his massive bare chest and scratched at the thin layer of hair that dusted his pectoral muscles.” Here’s one more for good measure, “A light breeze rustled the vibrant green leaves of the many trees that towered over them and blew a strand of her auburn hair into her young face,” as Damara describes the beautiful world of Farwin Wood and a younger Sarah, the heroine of our story.
If you were, or are a fan of Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Avatar, TWBOBL will surely stoke your imagination and set the child heart that still lives inside you ablaze once more as it incorporates that dual world and dream-like elements. In fact I think a James Cameron could bring to life a mini series adaptation of this wonderfully magical story. Author Drea Damara has quite an imagination.
The Weeping Books of Blinney Lane is a story of love, honor and family. It brought more than a tear to my eyes and a smile to my face. I love this story so much. It is my new favorite and I will be reading it again and again.
