It's not hard to find strangeness here.

On my drive from the southeast part of Florida to the western shore of St. Pete Beach, I encountered one very odd thing after the next, in a very strange (at least to me) landscape.
I'm not used to driving for hours without seeing any buildings, as a native northeasterner, for one thing. But in the vast wilderness of empty pastures that is central Florida, where there are no houses or buildings for hours, was a Wal-Mart, with a full parking lot. My mind went blank.

I drove another two hours, seeing no signs of any slightest civilization, and came to---are you ready---a store selling ball gowns, with mannequins modeling them in the front window. I hadn't even seen one other car in hours. I drove another two hours, with no houses or stores or buildings, only cow pastures without cows, very rarely seeing another car, and came to a gas station, where stood---the Refrigerator! And he was signing a boy's autograph, before climbing into his Ferrari and driving away. And on it went like this. The mammoth brahma bull, giant horns ready to charge me, standing in the road so I couldn't pass, was also a highlight.

My point of telling this is to illustrate that Florida, by its nature, is a very weird place.

This book does an excellent job of listing the most notable strange places, complete with great photos. You can spend years seeing all the places and attractions listed in this book.
Haunted places and houses, places where cars roll uphill, places that defy gravity, very peculiar buildings, and more spooky, mysterious, and bazarre oddities are included.

I next want to visit the motel that's a tree house, and the white spherical houses of the future built back in the 1960s. If you love weirdness as I do you will like this book.
It does a great job of listing and describing most of the main weird places to see in Florida.

I first discoverded this book in Sarasota Fl. This book contains many strange facts from many different parts of the state. Hauntings, weird geology, strange architecture, unexplaned occurrences, its all here in one book. If you are a fan of "Ripleys believe it or not" you will love this book. (You Tube BobWebbmusic)

For a state that started out as retirement-ville, Florida has become a boomland for tourists and families alike. This book gives an exponential view into the boot of America. I have lived in FL for 24 years and this work of art was one of best reads and information revealers into my home. The places and people leave the reader craving more and more. An incredible read for anyone.

I have spent about a decade living in Florida, and while I was well-aware of some of the wackiness the Sunshine State has to offer, this "off the beaten path" guidebook has added a whole lot of insight, not to mention many, many sights and places I have added to my "must see" and "must do" bucket lists. If seeing those places is only half as much fun as it was reading about those in this book, those trips will be totally worth it. :-)

I bought this as a gift but my husband wanted to keep it so I will be ordering another one. He lived in Florida more than 20 years and had not heard of a lot of the things in the book so the authors definitely managed to find some obscure stories. It's a great conversation piece.

Moved to FL almost 7 years ago & this has really helped to find out more about my adopted state. I'm not a let's-go-visit-Disney-type person & THIS book has some great destinations to look up. I thought I was living on the edge by going to Weeki Wachee & psong behind the mermaid tail ..... . BOY, did this ever open my eyes to the weird (& interesting!). :)

I expected more out of the way places. Kind of like "locals only" secret places. This was pretty much just a touristy book full of a lot of tourist traps and a few local legends about places that were so vague you couldn't begin to actually track them down.
