With the media putting so much emphasis on super-heroes like The Avengers, Batman and The Flash, it’s easy to forget that not all vintage comic books featured characters in masks and capes. And the long-underwear boys didn’t have an exclusive on bizarre, way-out stories either.

At the same time that Mr. Mxyzptlk was vexing Superman with inter-dimensional magic pranks, girls were treated to romance stories like “Love of a Lunatic.” While Jimmy Olsen was turning into a Giant Turtle Boy (complete with purple swim trunks) a bear in the zoo was playing cupid in “Bosco Plays Matchmaker!” And during the same era when Paste Pot Pete was making things sticky for the Human Torch, romance comics were featuring four-color fables like “I Fell For A Commie.”

Since romance comics were ostensibly love stories intended for young girls, these weird comics seem even weirder in that context.

Leave it to editor/designer Clizia Gussoni and comic book archeologist Craig Yoe to unearth some of the weirdest of these tales and collect them into a lovely, hardcover coffee-table book. (Although your friends may think you’re weird if you leave this out on your coffee table!)

The stories in this volume originally appeared in impossible-to-find vintage comic books, and were recently reprinted in the Yoe Books ongoing comics series Weird Love. Even if you already bought the comic book editions there’s a good argument to be made for getting the sturdy hardback volume which will likely last a lifetime. What a nice heirloom this would make for your heirs!

As usual with Yoe Books there’s high-quality printing and binding, top-notch design, and loving attention to detail. As I’ve said before, you don’t get the same experience on a Kindle.

I really wanted to like this anthology. The quirky theme and great cover grabbed my interest. Unfortunately, most of the stories are banal and even a touch of "weirdness" cannot save them. The only exceptions are "Love of a Lunatic" and "Weep,Clown, Weep!" and even these, in my view, are not worth the price of the volume. A rather dull casual-read on the whole. If only the selections lived up to the promise of the cover! This is not a volume that warrants space on your bookshelf. Find it at a library or borrow it, if you must. Spend your hard-earned dollars on better romance anthologies such as "Teen Angst" by Tom Mason, "Heart Throbs: The Best of DC Romance Comics" by Naomi Scott, "Agonizing Love: The Golden Era of Romance Comics" by Michael Barson, or "Young Romance: The Best of Simon and Kirby's Romance Comics." As a quotation on the back cover asserts, this volume might make for an interesting text in a feminist studies class, but for sheer entertainment, look elsewhere.

I had very low expectations because most of the romance comics from that era are quite dull. THIS book however is a hoot! It's funny and entertaining, a great read!

I'm so glad I've got this book. It's beautifully designed and packaged as you can expect from all Yoe Books. It's a smaller book, but that makes it for a more intimate reading (it's about weird love, right?!). The stories are very entertaining. I can't believe this stuff was published! So un-PC!!! LOL! I recommend a daily dose of "Weird Love: You Know You Want It" to all my friends!

As usual, Yoe's books are a design gem and for those who enjoy both the historical artwork and the social commentary of the writing of the time, it's a fascinating read. As Comic Book Girl 19 mentions, "If comics are a social barometer of the times that they are in, and you are even the slightest bit interested in cultural progress, then you will get a guaranteed kick out of all the wonderfully bizarre stories therein." I would love to see this tome utilized in a history of women in media class or even as a means of opening up a discussion in a culture and book club.
