Editorial Reviews

2014 saw Marmozets firmly arrive on the scene with the group receiving high critical praise and support from BBC Radio 1 DJs Daniel P Carter, Huw Stephens and Zane Lowe. Recently picked by Rolling Stone as one of "10 New Artists You Need To Know," Marmozets staked their claim amongst the best records of 2014; Alternative Press placed "The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets" at #5 on their "10 essential albums of 2014" list, Metal Hammer placed "The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets" at #8 on their "2014 Critics Choice" list and Big Cheese named "The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets" their #1 album of 2014. Furthermore, Marmozets were voted "Best New Band" in the 2014 Kerrang! Reader's Poll thanks in part to their growing reputation which has been underlined by show stopping sets on Warped Tour this past summer as well as a more recent headline set on the BBC Introducing stage at last year's Glastonbury Festival.

Saw them listed on a site called Metal Hammer. I became curious and hopped onto Spotify to have a listen. After the first 16 bars of the first song my immediate reaction was "Yep, I have to buy this." So without listening to another song, I purchased the album. Man was I NOT LET DOWN. This band takes pop punk, kicks it square in the balls, and says "Let us show you how this s*** is done". I've heard this band labeled as "Math Rock". I get that, because of some of the crazy time signatures and riffs. Whatever genre this band fits into (and it fits into a lot of them), stop reading this review now and buy the album. Why? Because you'll wind up saying "Why have Marmozets not been in my life before now?"

Why are you still reading this? Buy the album and turn it up to eleven before your pot pie cools off and you lose your appetite for rock.

I'd give this six stars, but Amazon won't let me.

I've had the privilege of seeing this band live in the UK and in the US. Both times they put on a hell of a show, but you could tell they're still fighting to gain a foothold in the states. Regardless, their debut is surprising in its consistency. The first thing that strikes me is how they throw in odd time signature measures here and there. The song Cover Up is an especially good example, try tapping your foot along to that. Their sense of melody is also very impressive, see the intro/chorus of Hit the Wave or Captivate You for some good examples. The vocals are a bit raw at times, but I like that as it adds to the individuality and honesty of the record. Don't be turned off by the screamy bits; I was never much into the genres of music that utilize that singing style but it's typically used intelligently on this record, at lyrical/musical moments where it makes sense and isn't just screaming for screaming's sake. The rhythm section is solid, the guitar playing is great. It's hard to pin down similar sounding music (I hear Tool and At the Drive In at times). The songwriting is strong enough to showcase these progressive moments in songs that you want to sing along to. I hope they're able to eventually find a strong fanbase in the US because we're always in need of young talent in the rock scene.

Kinda reminds me of the emo/screamo of the early 2000's but this fresh young UK band has a strong front woman (Becca McIntyre) in the likes of Haley Williams of Paramore and Lacey Sturm of Flyleaf. If you like bands like that with a strong female vocalist, then this band is absolutely for you.

This album just oozes confidence. From the first track to the last. Absolutely perfect. Great vocals, insane drumming and some very very cool riffs. This is only their first record. If this is what a band can accomplish on their debut, I can't wait to see their 2nd, 3rd and 4th Albums!

There are many many great rock albums that have released this year, but for it's originality and vocals, I would rate this one at the very top! Great stuff!

This is brilliant! Hard to classify (post-hardcore math punk?) ** A series of powerful and unique, guitar-driven musical snacks. Terrific drums, virtuoso rock guitar and one-in-a-million vocals from Becca MacIntyre (one of rock's sudden influential females). Marmozets have a very bright future and will probably be around as long as they want to be. At first, "Move, Shake, Hide" becomes an addictive repeater, then the rest just blossoms beautiful hardcore in your mind so no other music sounds quite right. This is what rock music is about. What a terrific, powerful debut!
