One hell of a nightmare

I have been listening to Alice Cooper for years now but it's just been the classics from the Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits CD and the tracks from Classicks. Recently I decided to dive in a little deeper into Alice's world. I purchased Killer and Welcome To My Nightmare for starters. I was instantly enamored by the fine piece of work that is Killer. I listened to it 3 times over on my first listen.

When it came time to pop Welcome To My Nightmare into the CD player I wasn't quite so pleased with what I heard. Of course I instantly liked Only Women Bleed (since I already knew the live version from Classicks), Welcome To My Nightmare (I used to work in a party supply store that played that song along with other "Halloween" type music during the month of October), and Department of Youth (I remembered this one from the Alice Cooper Prime Cuts Documentary). With tracks like Cold Ethyl, The Black Widow, and Escape, I knew immediately that with a few listens I'd end up liking them. When I first heard Years Ago and Steven I felt like I really was in a Nightmare. They reminded me of the song Killer from the album of the same name. Lots of random sounds and noise more than an actual song. I did not see myself liking that portion of the CD whatsoever.

After the first listen was complete, I took the CD out of the player and honestly didn't have much desire to ever put it back in. Honestly as soon as I removed Nightmare from my CD player I put Killer back in to make up for the not so pleasant sounds I had just heard.

A couple days later I was walking through my current place of work and saw a sign that said Attn: Steven (some last name that I can't remember). Instantly the "Steven! I hear my name!" part of the song Steven popped into my head. For the rest of the night at work I had that part in my head. When I got off I decided to give Nightmare another chance and I won't say that I was instantly in love with the songs but I was much more into them than my first listen.

Now, many listens later, I really like the CD. I still don't like it as much as Killer or some of the other songs that I was already more familiar with but it is a thing of beauty. I would definitely recommend this album to anyone wanting to become more familiar with Alice but if you are more familiar with his earlier stuff from the Alice Cooper band of even his later stuff, just listen to this CD with an open mind because it won't be like anything you've EVER heard before.

Alice Cooper describes himself as a rock 'n roll vaudevillian and there is no better evidence than this album. Whereas most rock artists take themselves way too seriously, some to the point of being buffoons, Alice takes a totally different track. Hell, even his stage name is over the top. He takes himself very seriously as an entertainer and musician, but the whole "Alice Cooper" persona he invented for himself is contrived to be entertaining and nothing else. The only song on this album that betrays that is "Only Women Bleed". Listen to the lyrics and you can see that it how he, Vincent Fournier, actually feels! It also happens to be his only hit ballad and I would rate it much higher in my opinion than "Beth" from KISS. They may share the same love for makeup and bombastic stage shows, but IMO, everything about Alice Cooper is better than KISS! The KISS Army may disagree, but I believe that most impartial observers would agree, Mr. Cooper's music has stood the test of time much better than his rivals. Sure, there is a kitschy-ness to this (and any other Alice Cooper) album, but that is just part of the joke. If you may have started your Alice Cooper collection with "Hits", I would have to suggest this as your next purchase. The reason is, that this is a concept album and it also has some of his best work. Every song on this album is part of the overall story about "Steven", a mentally damaged child, a subject that was also explored by Pink Floyd (The Wall) and The Who (Quadrophenia) well after this album was released. I guess one could say that this album is a trailblazer of sorts. BTW, I also highly recommend "Billion Dollar Babies" and "From The Inside" if you are interested in other Alice Cooper purchases. "From the Inside" is another concept album, co-written by Bernie Taupin about Alice's (Vincent's?) own real-life commitment to a mental health facility to overcome his alcohol addiction.

Coop's first concept album about a dicey character called Steven, this will still send chills down your spine and the make you laugh at the tongue in cheek humour. No one combines the two better than Mr Cooper, and he's still doing it. This is where it all starts for Steven (or does it?), but it doesn't end here.
Cooper fans will love this. For them, there are no surprises. For me, my favourite tracks as the title track and The Black Widow. Ballad fans will really go for Only Women Bleed. The lyrics are Alice Cooper al the way, and as such have much more substance than the slew of schmaltzy contractual obligation ballads most other rock/metal bands have churned out ever since.
A great addition to any Alice Cooper fan's CD collection.

Classic Alice Cooper first solo album which still sounds as good today as it did in its first release. Only Women Bleed is still a standout track as are Cold Ethyl and Black Widow. But it's the three tracks, Years Ago, Steven and The Awakening that are the killer tracks for me. Bonus alternative tracks are interesting to hear too. Quick delivery and well packaged. A true classic by the legendary singer.
