If I were to compare Carol Sloane with men jazz singers, I would have to say that she is a cross between Frank Sinatra, and Tony Bennett, with a touch of Nat King Cole. I have all of her albums that I can find on Amazon, and it is not possible for me to name a favorite. I love all the songs on this album. 5 of these songs are "stand outs" for me, "Something To Remember", "If You Could Love Me", The Morning Of The Blues", "Where Are You?", and for Sax lovers, "Spring Will Be A Little Later This Year", For me, listening to Carol's renditions of the old standards is music for relaxing. It works equally well as soft background music in a conversational setting (just lower the volume). In fact, other than complete silence, I know of no situation when her music is inappropriate. Of course, I am biased as your may have noticed. I like a broad spectrum of music; from Bluegrass to Bach. Exceptions would be Rap, Heavy Meal, et. al. If you like jazz singers, buy this album, you won't be disappointed. But then, if you already have any of Carol's other albums, you already know that! Whisper Sweet

Recorded at age 73 this release is the work of a master vocalist. Along with Chris Connor, Carol Sloane is in the limited number of vocalists that create recordings that use their age as an advantage. For example, Sloane selected a repertoire that is classic, in the traditional sense of songs with well crafted melody, lyrics and arrangements. She assembled like minded collaborators that are also instrumentalists of the first rank and then worked out arrangements that allow her to emphasize the song lyrics through her exceptional skill in phrasing and matching the emotional dynamic to the lyric subject. This is a work of exceptional artistic merit accomplished in spite of an age diminished vocal instrument.

Do you enjoy listening to jazz renditions of the Great American Songbook but notice that tradition may have run its course and its new singers are too affected and somehow just don't make it? Well there's still hope. Carol Sloane is still making music of high quality that pays attention to the meaning and emotional content of the lyrics. She still has an attractive voice that never strains for effects and she still records with musicians who 'know.' This most recent of her offerings incorporates a few tunes that haven't yet proved themselves and are weaker than what her fans may be used to but hey, she's recorded just about all the good music ever written, her Sinatra tribute album alone is a desert island disc. The one blot on her perfect record (no pun intended) is "Zoot Walks In," which, except for Ken's evocative solo is her only career embarrassment (in my opinion).
I notice I use the word 'still' several times. Probably because the audience for this gentle Art, given the lack of sophistication of today's music, may not increase. So get everything she ever recorded, starting backwards because she improved with age, and experience what it is like to hear romance expressed with taste, depth and, let's not forget, swing.
