Editorial Reviews

Review

"Filled with practical wisdom, exercises, and exactly the right advice to help you overcome barriers to becoming a welcome, passionate, effective speaker."
—GLORIA STEINEM

“This should be on every young woman’s “must read immediately” list and if you know a young woman about to leave high school or college, do consider presenting them with a copy of this invaluable book.”
Monsters and Critics

"I wish I had owned a copy of The Well-Spoken Woman before I first stepped up to a microphone. Decisions look different when there’s a woman at the table, but we have to get there first—and Jahnke has a keen sense of what it truly takes for any woman to transform her ambitions into real-world success."
—GOVERNOR BEV PERDUE, North Carolina

"A great resource for every woman who wants to make her voice heard: proven techniques, real-life examples, and helpful tips on how to make the most of every presentation—from school seminars and business meetings to local political campaigns and nationally televised debates."
—ANN F. LEWIS, former White House director of communications

"Jahnke is a brilliant communicator and teacher. Armed with this personal guide packed with her field-tested strategies and practical tips, you will ace your media interviews, speeches, testimony, and debates. This book is an indispensable tool for any woman who wants to get her message out."
—DEBBIE WALSH, director, Center for American Women and Politics, Rutgers University

"For years, women across the country have relied on Christine K. Jahnke. From governors to senators, she’s helped women craft their own persuasive stories and remain confident no matter what comes their way. With this book, she adds insight from accomplished women—and brings her powerful lessons for communicating to everyone. This book is a tool to help women find their voices and make our country better."
—STEPHANIE SCHRIOCK, president, EMILY’s List

"This is a great ‘how to do it well’ manual. And I loved the illustrative stories that created a sense of intimacy with women I’ve admired from afar. I want this book with me wherever I go—a great resource, and how nice to be in the company of Maya Angelou, Ann Richards, Hillary Clinton, and Barbara Jordan!"
—DONNA STARK, vice president, the Annie E. Casey Foundation

"Speech coach Christine K. Jahnke has written a book that will motivate women to believe in themselves and become great speakers. She believes women should be risk takers and cites numerous examples of how everyday women have exceeded audience expectations."
—CELINDA LAKE, pollster and strategist, Lake Research Partners

"We may have ‘come a long way, baby,’ but when it comes to speaking publicly—whether in front of a TV camera or an audience—women still face a unique set of expectations and assumptions. And no one understands that like Christine K. Jahnke. She’s dedicated her career to helping women look and sound their best. I’ve watched Jahnke work her magic on women politicians. And I find myself turning instinctively to the advice she gave those women for myself."
—AMY WALTER, political analyst and TV commentator

Great book! It is full of very practical tips and guidelines that will make any woman a confident speaker. There was so much that I actually hadnt read elsewhere. I love the fact that she details such simple guidelines as how to stand on stage (the champion stance); how to make eye contact (the 4 box diagram); how to walk on stage (the 3 star diagram). I think it is a must read for any professional (even men).

If you are seeking an up-to-the-minute resource that will turn you into a first rate speaker, The Well-Spoken Woman is your book. Written by top speech coach Christine K. Jahnke, this book leads you into claiming your power by confidently stating your ideas and opinions while looking polished and prepared. In short, it helps you conquer public-speaking anxiety and be taken seriously. Illustrated by Kersti Frigell with real life examples from speakers such as Ann Richards, Pat Summitt, Maya Angelou, and Melinda Gates, the material is engagingly displayed and clearly laid out.

The Well-Spoken Woman's opening premise is that a woman's power persona evolves from bringing her whole self and signature style to the podium. "Expression and engagement are hot... Dialogue, listening, and showing empathy are now valued and respected." It seems the time has finally come to express our uniquely feminine leadership from the front of the room.

Research reveals that 58% of a speaker's impact comes from body language and appearance, 38% from voice quality, and 7% from the message. Now that we have the science behind it, it's easier for a woman to identify which elements of her presentation really matter and which she should spend the most time improving. This is the part of the book I learned the most from; it changed my focus from the message itself to the way my voice carries the message, and from what I wear to how I move.

After learning what makes for an impactful live performance, Jahnke moves on to something she calls the "the five C's of message development": clarity, connection, compelling, concise, and continual. The neat thing about her "message map" technology is that it applies to all different kinds of topics.

Perfect for any woman who plans on having career goals that involve getting in front of audiences. This book seems superficially focused at first, but Jahnke does a brilliant job revealing that how one's external posture, apparel, expressions, etc are actually the sounding board of how any person views themselves- and when you don't take care of those details, the results can be destructive to your career. She also gives great outlines of how to structure speeches depending on what your goals are with your audience.

She uses tons of examples throughout political history, and I'll admit I had to use Wikipedia to look up many of her references, but I'm thankful I did. The real life stories of other women making this world a better place will push you past your own comfort zone, and hopefully pursue your own goals and dreams.

Which of us wouldn't want to be a well-spoken leader at a moment's notice during a crisis, or at one of the most important presentations of the year, or at a high profile media setting? I wholeheartedly recommend Christine Jahnke's book, The Well-Spoken Woman: Your Guide to Looking and Sounding Your Best to any woman or man who wants to make a difference appearing before large or small audiences. I have given many copies of "Well-Spoken Woman" to work colleagues, friends, and family members so the world may start to more clearly hear their voices. This compelling and practical book distills years of study of women in the media and is a true treasure for all who read it.

Ms. Jahnke has worked with our organization to coach technical experts on how to distill complicated information into what really matters to broad audiences. I have watched her catalyze transformations in people during individual coaching and in small group settings. "The Well-Spoken Woman" provides you the opportunity to experience her world-class approach and her gifts in this arena. I refer to the book as a refresher in my own preparation for television interviews or major presentations.

This book is well written and a pleasure to read. So often sentences made me smile and marvel at how well she encapsulated the heart of the matter. The real-life examples of woman transcending challenging situations to become well-spoken leaders are fun to read, made me laugh out loud, and easily remember the key practical points.

I found very many good hints to help women become professional speakersin this book. Despite the many great examples, the author focuses on the American environment only, and consequently uses American examples. The book would have been far more valuable for non-American women if she had brought in examples from women leaders from other continents and countries.
