I was all set to buy the Victorinox Tinker when I came across the Wenger Highlander model. I have the Victorinox Champ, which faithfully served me well for 30 years. So, I can hardly believe I moved away from Victorinox but chose the Wenger model because of tool selection and design.
First, a video on the Ranger model brought to my attention the sharp can opener that has twice the effective length as the Victorinox. I COULD NOT GET THE DESIGN SUPERIORITY OUT OF MY HEAD. In addition, the design of the can opener may also serve to dig, thereby saving the blade - a MAJOR ADVANTAGE over yet another screw driver. (The Victorinox can opener is not designed to dig at all.) The can opener and awl, working in combination is likely to be the most useed tools.
Second, a pet peeve of mine is the Tinker has a duplicate shorter blade. It suggests a lack of confidence in the main blade. With only 4 tools on top the best Victorinox could do is duplicate tools, the blade and flat heat screw driver? The Wenger has a finger nail file which is much more useful in EDC. I often bend or rip by fingernails doing manual labor.
Third, An innovative design improvement over the Tinker is the tweezers and tooth pick are inboard and not prone to grab something in your pocket. Also, the screw driver/bottle opener has a patented lock upon insertion feature that is an OUTSTANDING safety and confidence building feature.
I thought of sharpening the awl to use it more effectively to open plastic packages but it is very thick and robust enough to do its job of putting holes in substantial material like canvas, leather or even wood. I've thought long and hard about my daily tool needs and settled on two knives. One that locks and is easily accessible on my belt or clipped to my pocket for quickest deployment in utility applications. BTW, this Ultimate EDC Pocket Mult-Tool also has a blade that opens with authority, a sound of unmistakable quality and is razor sharp! I plan to primarily use it for food and as a back up. Although 35% more than the Tinker, I think the tool selection and design advantages make it well worth it. Every man should have one and not leave home without it. Buy it now!
I wish Victorinox would figure out that people could use a file on all the knives instead of the small blade. Very good EDC knife, if you can live without the scissors.
