This is my favorite of the two Anchor Bay Werner Herzog boxed sets. The sets came put years before Criterion put out new dvds of some of these movies at a massive increase in costs. Some will find their prices worth it, i don't so these sets are still worth it and a great buy used.
My interest in Herzog films goes back to when you could only find VHS tapes released by New Yorker Video. Kasper Hauser, Aguirre, Heart of Glass and Stroszek were all bpught on VHS, the last I spent $79.99 for at a Virgin Megastore near Union Square. Seeing the movies on DVD for the first time is a thrill I still havent forgotten and half he mpvies are in this set. Some have interesting commentary like Even Dwarfs Started Small has Crispin Glover talking with Herzog.
I heartedly recommend tracking this set down which is very reasonably priced if you buy it used. The sister set compiles Herzog's wprk woth Klaus Kinski. That set is like Herzog's grestest hits. Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre, Woyczeck, Nosferatu are all in that set but this set is more valuable to me and shows the depth pf Herzpg's talents. From strange surrealist stories to atmospheric documentaries like the one featuring the burning Kuwaiti oil fields which were set ablaze by the Iraqi's before their final retreat.

On a technical note, all of the films played well on their respective disks, I experienced none of the issues other viewers have mentioned.
If there is a film that accurately chronicles hell on earth, it is Lessons of Darkness, a tone poem of uniquely dark vision, an unrelenting metaphor of destruction. But then film covers the instant a boiling cauldron of oil is exploded shut, and we cheer. When a worker re-ignites a silenced well, the workers themselves seem to be just be letting off steam. Either way, I'm not aware of any filmmaker who could have caught this ressurection from madness.
Strosek is a masterpiece of hope and rebirth in the New World. Unfortunately, its characters run into the slickest salesman outside of a Flannery O'Connor story. But that doesn't change the journey they undertake, or their realization of failure.
Little Dieter Needs To Fly works on many levels-epilogues are usually throw in set pieces- but not here. Even the epilogue is well planned and fervently felt. An epic narrative to the power of memory.
Heart of Glass did not work for me, remained earthbound, refusing to soar like the others. It's Herzog's most experimental work, and he's entitled.
If Diane Arbus ever made a film, Even Dwarfs Started Small would be the result. I can't tell where Herzog's heart is. The film's moral center seems askew, leaving an utter sense of loss to prevail.
Made at great personal expense, Fata Morgana is another tone poem, a near miss as a great film. Herzog is the second filmaker (Robert Altman-McCabe & Mrs. Miller) to seek out the songs of Leonard Cohen for the spirtual lift they impart to cinema.

These are stunning films. "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser" is one of the classics; the shot of the rye field in the wind alone is worth the price of admission. It's good that Anchor Bay is emphasizing that they'll rectify defective disks, though, because problems abound. Thanks to an earlier reviewer for posting their complaints URL! On my copy of "Kaspar Hauser" the commentary simply won't turn off (and it's not that I haven't figured out how, because it turns off on the other disks). Then occasionally it turns off all by itself, but if you try to get the subtitles, it turns back on -- so you can't watch the film WITH subtitles but WITHOUT commentary. Exasperating! While I was fiddling with commentaries, however, I managed to watch the whole of "Heart of Glass" with commentary. "Heart of Glass" is not the most accessible film -- not because, as Herzog says, it's slow, but because hypnotized actors are more like zombies than actors. But the film with the commentary on is the most surreal, fascinating experience -- the stories behind the making of the film are an artwork in themselves. The same is true of "Kaspar Hauser" -- an unintended benefit of the disk problem. Providing Anchor Bay makes good on their defective disks, this is a great set.

What can I say about this box set? Well I considder this an essential item in my video library, but then again, I'm a Herzog fan. If you're the kind of person who likes your films polished and shiny with clean cut characters and corny ideals than this probably isn't for you. These films are all heart and focus on characters western audiences are not used to seeing, which is what makes them so special to me and thousands of other Herzog fans. If you're already familliar with Herzog's work you'll be delighted with this set. Seven of his classic works spanning from the completely bazarre like Even dwarfs started small (which I particularly recommend) to documentaries such as Little Dieter needs to fly, all packaged nicely in individual cases with a booklet outlining all films. A must have for fans but definitely not for everyone.

Even Dwarfs/Enigma of Kaspar Hauser
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on July 28, 2010
So far I have only checked out the Enigma of Kaspar Hauser and Even Dwarfs started Small.
Kaspar is a sublime film - it has many Hertzog hallmarks - a bit stiff and theatrical, and ambitious effects which are unfortunately curtailed due to budget. I love this film, but as often with this director it leaves more questions than answers.
Even Dwarfs is frankly irritating. An extraordinary set and plot (what happens when the lunatics take over the asylum, basically). Whilst the freakshow ambience induced by getting real dwarves to act the parts is interesting and unsettling (for a time), this is hardly the stuff of high drama. It is a bit like "Freaks" the banned 1930s US film with the plot, murder and menace removed. What is left ultimately is just wanton vandalism.
I look forward to the other films in the set - I hope to report back in due course.

These films are the best!! Werner's films take a wonderful look at unusual characters, strange music and soundtracks and very whacky stories.
