I chose it for several reasons.
1) It is oval. Oval pots allow longer pieces of meat for cooking.
2) Four Quarts is a good size for preparing larger dishes for groups. (I go to a lot of potlucks).
3) At the same time, I can still make smaller dishes in it without worrying
4) It is simple. It has 3 settings, keep warm, low, and high. No fancy electronics to worry about.
When my last "Crockpot" broke, I debated between several sizes. I even looked at the fancy ones that had three sizes of pots included. After comparing prices, I settled on this 4-quart cooker. I figured I could buy it PLUS a small one and still have money left over. Add that to the fact that if I bought two different sizes with the base, I could have two different things cooking at the same time, and this was a real bargain.
If you haven't used a slow cooker before, depending on what you include, you may need to stir occasionally to keep it from burning/sticking. And, meats cook faster than vegies - so save your rare roasts for the oven - slow cookers are for well-done meat that is so tender it falls off the bone. Do check a recipe book or an online recipe before you start, and you'll be a lot happier.
Edited - it is now November 2012 - didn't realize I'd had this so long. It continues to be a workhorse at our home and has made countless meals and keeps on cooking. While they have since come out with some that have clasps to hold the lid on, that is the only feature I would have changed on this hard-working appliance.
Good quality,easy to use,and clean. 5 stars.
After I finished cooking, I set it at "warm",
the result showed that it was still too hot at "warm".
(Food in the slow cooker was still slowly cooked at "warm". )
So we need to buy a good timer for it.
(which made the purchase not a good deal.)
BTW, I agree with other people said that,
the size is very useful for a small family, also looks nice.
This one works perfectly. It is large enough for a small roast, but not large and cumbersome, like a 7 or 8 quart. It's oval shaped, and shorter, so it isn't as "tippy" as a round pot.
Well pleased with an excellent product.
I'd really like to give this a 3.5 It seems like it cooks too fast, when it says to cook a meal 10 hours on low or 6 on high, it has been done by 6 on high/4.5 hours on low, and as an ex culinary student/cook I wouldn't want to keep boiling my protein for another couple of hours past it being done. My unit also simmers/boils much higher on one side of the pot than the other, with visible boiling occuring on one side with no action on the other, and with the recommendation to not take off the lid to stir/check seasoning partway through without risking the heat dropping off it made it a bit of a worry to do so.
The downside was today when I smelled burning with my pot roast which had been on high on 5 hours, it had steamed out around the sides and left splattered moisture all over the counter (which was fine), and I turned it off and put it in the fridge to cool and saw that liquid had bubbled over the sides and burned onto the metal frame and the bottom of the unit. I put a bit of water in the bottom after it cooled so it would be easy to clean and when I went back a few hours later it was dry, I thought I just hadn't put enough water in it, and lo and behold, the extra I added immediately seeped out the bottom screw-hole that is set in the main base, and the water was pouring all over my counter.
So, 5 for being an awesome utensil. -0.Read more ›

Great slow cooker. Tried other brands and programmable, but prefer this model. Does what it says...Don't like the programmable...hard to judge how long to cook it. Read morePublished 3 months ago by write girl
You can dry out a 4 pound roast in couple hours. Even the dogs are disappointed.Published 9 months ago by Mary Vine
Cooker arrived as expected. I gave a 3 star rating because the crock pot had a flaw on one side, but overall it did cook good.Published 10 months ago by ARTHUR L. JOHNSON
Having a on/off light was a major selling point for me. If it wasn't a slow cooker costing half the price would do. Read morePublished 13 months ago by Sharon Stillson
Good little crock pot for the money. My other one seemed to run too hot on the low setting and so does this one. I cut the cooking times in half. Read morePublished 16 months ago by Amazon Customer
