I'm a long-time, multiple Stir Crazy user (45+ years, I think), but I am incredibly disappointed with this new model. It purports to fix many of the minor irritations with my old Stir Crazy, but it does not make satisfactory popcorn.

My first Stir Crazy Deluxe did not work at all. West Bend customer service then sent me the wrong model (Kettle Krazy) as a replacement. I finally received a second Stir Crazy Deluxe after more calls (missing one of the bumpers on the feet and with an on/off switch that failed to light up when on). The second unit ran with wild swings in temperature and did not pop the corn properly. West Bend sent me a third unit that they took out of the box and tested before shipping. This unit did have all of the parts and appeared to work as designed. It did not make satisfactory popcorn.

This popper uses a halogen heating element, similar to those used on certain solid-surface cooktops. A halogen element heats up instantly, but the output level cannot be adjusted, so it must be cycled on and off to maintain a specific temperature. I've never had much luck keeping a consistent temperature on halogen cooktops and this popper is no exception.

My old Stir Crazy, with a standard electric heating element, takes a little while to get to temperature, but then almost all of the corn pops at once. The new Stir Crazy Deluxe begins to pop the corn and then the heating element cycles off. Although the latest unit I've received does pop the corn more-or-less continuously, the kernels are not fully popped. I feel this is because they are being overheated at a variable temperature. I am also left with an excessive number of unpopped kernels and a significant amount of burned kernels, burned popcorn, and burned bits of chaff.

I had 2 older models of the Stir Crazy. One for the house and one for my son in college. After dropping his and breaking it (yikes!), he left for school with mine. I researched all poppers and decided to stay with West Bend. I love the differences from my older model which are the "on/off switch" (used to just unplug) and the feature that allows the tray to be removed for easier cleaning. I was concerned reading about other reviewers saying that popcorn burned, but haven't had that problem.
Overall, very pleased and would absolutely recommend.

I read the reviews for the less expensive West Bend stir crazy and hoped this model would solve some of the problems. The stir rod on this model does not scratch the teflon coating and it has an on/off switch. Unfortunately, the on/off switch does not work. It just turns the LED light on and off, not the heating element. The write up says the stirring rod reverses. It did not over all the times I used the product. The heating element seems too hot. It was burning the corn that had already popped before even half the kernels had popped. I tried more oil and less oil to prevent the burning and nothing worked. I tried different popcorn. No joy. I was prepared to live with the bad on/off switch but I just never got any good popcorn out of this model. Sigh.

I freely admit, I am a popcorn junkie. I can't stand microwaved popcorn, airpopped is near tasteless. Stovetop cooking is best, but it's all too easy to burn your snack; I know, I've done it. But I've had three of these things now, and there's a reason they have been around so long...they work. And this is the best one yet.

The earlier iterations of the Stir Crazy were, to be fair, a pain in the dupah to clean. And no matter how well you cleaned, eventually the turn screw would gum up with overcooked oil, and the dome would crack. Maybe that was the signal to get a new one, I don't know.

Anyway, the Stir Crazy 2 solves these issues. The dome is much stouter, and the cooking surface comes out for easy cleaning. Takes maybe five minutes and you're ready to put it up till next time. The cord is longer and permanently attached, both great additions. Oh, and mine is PURPLE. So it looks good when it's sitting on the counter.

So it all works esoterically. But how does it POP? Well, perfectly. Even my 19 year old son had to come in to watch it...this is one of the wonderful things about the Stir Crazy...it's fun to watch! Still!

Taste being what it is, I prefer to use yellow corn, and I opt for Orville Reddenbacher. A good Indiana product. My first batch, I had exactly 2 unpopped kernels. 2. Oh, and don't bother using the butter well on top of the dome. Never works. Just melt it in the microwave while the corn's popping and drizzle it on afterward.

So far as longevity goes, well, be fair...I have no idea. But its predecessors lasted 8-10 years each, and with its easier cleaning I imagine this one may last longer. But after its first use, this confirmed popcorn fanatic is convinced that this machine is the best thing to happen to popcorn since melted butter. Outstanding.

I have had many--many--many popcorn poppers. I have never been a big fan of any of them--Until now. I really like this one! It pops well, AND it is easy to clean. We had the Cuisinart one the last two times which were "ok". They were better than what we had, and I always thought Cuisinart was supposed to be the best. Not in popcorn poppers. I have not had this one long...but if it can last longer than two years...I will definitely be a fan.
