Update: Like many of the other reviewers I have found that I do get a bunch of burnt popcorn. This did not happen with the previous Stir Crazy I owned. Still, the fact that I can just pop it in the dishwasher more than makes up for the fact that I get a bit of burnt popcorn.
On the other hand, unlike the recent model of Stir Crazy, this model does a very good job of popping most of the corn. Also, being able to remove the bottom plate allows me to clean oil that seeps down the side before it gets into the inner workings, a problem that has been killing my Stir Crazy poppers after about a year since the design changed. The oil in the works would cause the heating element to turn off too soon, leaving most of the popcorn unpopped. It looks like this will not be an issue with the Stir Crazy 2!
I like having the power switch in the front, but I miss being able to remove the power cord for storage.
While not perfect, I am very satisfied with the Stir Crazy 2, and I expect it will last significantly longer than the current Stir Crazy (1) model.
Typically I'm using this popular once a week, when I'm making popcorn for a large crowd. I will often go through 2 pounds of popcorn in a single night.
Regarding the popper...
It worked great. Its a little flimsier than the original, but it worked really well, until the on/off switch malfunctioned.
Then it wouldn't shut off without unplugging, and I found this out the hard way after popping some corn. hit the off stitch, lifted off the bowl and base and the *extremely hot* and still on heating element burned my arm. Could not unplug it right away because I had my hands full of hot popcorn bowl and base. Really dangerous!
Well, first (though it was Amazon and not House Smart) sent me 2 units. Only charged me for one, but sent two. Maybe the second was a spare because these things tend to break? But in filling out the return info, I was disappointed that they did not offer me a replacement - only a refund - which they won't process till they receive the defective one. Usually if something needs to be returned via Amazon, they send a replacement out immediately.
I'd be willing to try a replacement and see if I have better luck with that, but I do admit I'm suspicious of the quality control at West Bend now, and since I have to wait for a refund to my card before buying a replacement, maybe I'll just look at something domestic-made .
