After the United States, Canada, and Mexico are crippled by a devastating nuclear attack linked to Osama Bin Laden's terrorist organization on June 6, 1993, they are forced to turn to Europe for financial aid to help rebuild. The three countries split forming several new countries and commonwealths. From these new divisions, the Great Lakes Commonwealth is formed.
May 9th -Present Day- The Great Lakes Commonwealth is rocked by the assassination of their President Dwight Phillips and his wife Martha. A 27-year-old gangster, Botma Cooper, is killed nearby in possession of a firearm and assumed to be the shooter. At the presidential residence in Detroit,Vice President Richard Rudwick is sworn in that very night.
After the slain president's burial, the Sims Report is released on the assassination putting the blame squarely on the shoulders of Botma Cooper. Many take this report as absolute truth while others see a conspiracy. President Rudwick uses this opportunity to disarm the people. Anyone not active duty military or police will have 30 days to turn over their weapons after the National Safety Act is put into effect by the House of Delegates in Detroit.
President Richard Rudwick is an arrogant, overbearing, closet atheist and drug addict with a God complex. Unable to get the people of West Michigan, a member of the Great Lakes Commonwealth, to bow down to the National Safety Act, he hires the mercenaries of Cybertooth Security Solutions as his own personal police to enforce his will.
Samantha Womack or “Momma Sam,” as she is affectionately known by the people, is the no- nonsense Regional Supervisor of West Michigan. She takes her job seriously and does her best to enforce the will of the people who elected her. She is tough but fair.
Anton Prisock is the President of the Patriotic Watchmen Society, a militia group based in West Michigan. He encourages the people of the area to hold on to their guns believing the National Safety Act is a violation of the Proclamation of Liberties Part 6, Section A, which supports people's civil rights and the right to defend themselves.
When a rally at Oshtemo Park turns deadly due to Cybertooth Security Solutions and regional armed forces trying to disperse the crowd and take the guns of the citizens, things take a drastic turn for the worse. The people of the Commonwealth are split. Can civil war be far behind?
West Michigan Rising by Russ Slater is filled with realistic characters and present-day ideals. Can taking guns away be a good thing or will it be the match that lights the fire under the downfall of a great nation?
I really enjoyed this book. Though there were some grammatical errors, it was an insightful look into the fears and strengths of people and their belief systems. I would give this book a four- out of five-star rating.
