The plastic is much cheaper and lighter feeling, as if it could crack easily, on my newer model. The press light to see the display (in the dark) is so dim and oriented in such a way that I can't even see the time, even with my reading glasses on. It keeps time fine, and the alarm could be a bit louder. I'm shopping for a new one due to my dissatisfaction with this clock.
Don't bother with travel clocks that find the NIST time--that will end badly, because hotels are the worst places to get the signal, more than half the time you are facing the wrong way and the signal would need to travel through 9 walls and 4 steel beams to get to your little clock. I live in a Boston suburb and I don't get the NIST time at my house, ever, due to hills. Twice a year I place my clocks in the back seat of my car when I go to work to catch the time. My point is, you have no idea how good the signal is where you're staying, even if near a big city, and manually setting a NIST clock is never easy. I've had them revert on their own back to the 'last good reading' after I manually set them. Which is why they now take a ride in my car.
What travelers need is an easy-to-set clock, one that is absolutely obvious whether the alarm is set or not. By that I mean no looking for little dot or no-little-dot, and trying to remember which means it's set, but a visible switch that is either on or off.
Silent and reliable. I don't really need to see it in the dark; I have my phone for that. Having a clock in hotel bathrooms is the best way to meter one's efforts and stay on time. It doesn't hurt to set it for 15 minutes past the time your phone alarm or the wake-up call is supposed to happen. If all went OK, you're in the bathroom to click it off before it rings, and if not . . .
Lightweight, very stable when free-standing, protective cover integral to the design, easy to set. Slam dunk.
