    Received a used product
When I received my product, it was obviously used and repackaged. There were scuffs and marks and a ziplock bag with pieces. Some gear I intentionally buy used and some I choose to buy new. This I wanted to buy new. This is my second one since I loved my first one. I plan to buy two more but not from this seller. This product should have been sold as used or open box with the markings details. I would have returned this one and ordered another one, but I didn’t have time to wait for another one. Two stars because this octabox diffuser is a great product and delivers nicely.

I have used speedlites for years but never have been happy with the quality of the modifiers available to shape those little lights. I have become quite spoiled by studio lighting equipment as the softboxes mount securely to studio strobes and work so well. I have really tired of bringing studio lighting on location and decided to try out this Rapid Box to see if I could really make a speedlite look like a "big light" easily and with portability. I am very impressed so far with the build quality of this tool. The mounting is very solid and I expect that it will last long into the future. The light quality is very nice for such a small size light shaper. I am very pleased and I recommend the item fully. I do use a Stofen diffuser on the Canon 580 EX to assure complete and even coverage across the entire front panel of the softbox and I can tell you that it does fill the front panel evenly with light as I verified this with my Sekonic flash meter while shooting the flash in manual settings. The difference is no more that .2 of a stop from center to outer most edge.

My last comment is this. I see that ProFoto is offering a speedlite speedring to adapt speedlites to their RFI line of softboxes. I am sure the quality of that bracket is excellent but this kit costs less complete than their bracket on its own PLUS this unit collapses and sets-up again in seconds. I cannot find anything bad to say about this excellent tool. I'm so glad I picked one up and I plan to buy at least one more.

If you're coming from typical cheap tent-pole style softboxes (Photodiox / Cowboy Studio) then you're in for a treat. This octabox has a telescoping internal structure that slides into place very smoothly, and without placing undue strain on the outer material. Yes, it *actually* collapses and expands in seconds, without requiring you to stick bent metal rods into a bracket.

The speedlite bracket is very sturdy, much nicer than I've been used to as well. I have no worries about my 600EX-RT flopping out because the tension screw grips it right where it ought to, so I can lock down the speedite's foot without it popping out. The diffuser panel is fit perfectly to the outer dimensions of the box, so it can be fitted easily, and holds in place without velcro.

Light from the box is great, though I actually haven't had a chance to try it without the reflector plate yet. The $20 add-on plate really ought to come with the box, but I've voiced those complaints in the reflector plate product reviews, so no need to repeat here. I find that with the reflector dish and diffuser panel in place, I can point this light directly at a subject and get a nice no-nonsense portrait that's free of hot spots, yet still has some depth and dimension to it. It's just a really nice source of light, and I see it being a part of most of my upcoming shoots, as I move more towards a speedlight-based setup.

The box also comes with a *really* nice carrying bag. Again, those coming from cheap $30 boxes will love this, it's a carrying case that you'll actually use!

This is a really nice light, and I look forward to picking up a Stripbox to go with it... and I guess another $20 reflector dish while I'm at it.

Very solid construction - that alone is worth the cost over the no-name brands. I upgraded from a cowboy square box that had an atrocious mount / speedring setup which wore out in no time.

This one is very sturdy - and once it's set up, it's solid & able to be positioned however you need without worry of anything falling off the stand.

I also grabbed the reflector plate to turn it into a beauty-dish-like setup... Without the diffuser panel on the front, it doesn't work as a beauty dish at all. It creates a donut-shaped light pattern. But with the panel on, you get nice, diffused light.

It's not as portable and quick to set up as some of the cheaper models, but that's not a deal-breaker. I usually keep it mounted and set up on a stand and just lay it on it's back across the back seat of a car. Still very portable.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest soft boxes for Speedlites on the market!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 27, 2016
I started my photography career over seven years ago and over these years I have owned quite a few different Speedlite modifiers and soft boxes. From all of the ones I have tried I have to say Westcott has simply become my go-to brand. Especially their Rapid Box range is beyond brilliant especially if you mainly use Speedlites (I have used this one with Canon 580EX and 600EX RTs). Westcott Rapid Boxes are well build and they don’t feel flimsy at all. The Speedlite bracket is more than excellent (I have come across with too many horrible ones over the years) and without lying you can set up this 26” Rapid Box within minutes. So it’s an excellent gear to take along for your travels as long as you aren’t trying to overpower the sun (which your Speedlites aren't really capable to do). Here’s my pros & cons for this Westcott Rapid Box 26”:

      PROS:
+ Build from high quality materials
+ Quick to set-up and dismantle
+ Comes with a carrying case
+ It’s very lightweight and easy to travel with
+ Diffusion panel and grid works simply by “siding it over” rather than having to play with velcro
      + Producer very beautiful light

      CONS:
      - You have to buy beauty dish “plate” separately which costs £25
      - Westcott grids for Rapid Boxes are S.U.P.E.R (and I mean ridiculously) expensive!

      SUMMARY:
In my opinion Westcott Rapid Box 26” is an excellent piece of lighting gear to own especially if you use mainly (or only) Speedlites. I would say you get what you pay for so the value is definitely there. I do also have the Westcott Rapid Box Duo which is a bigger version of this 26” model (which can be used with two Speedlites at once; hence the name Rapid Box “Duo”). This one is a bit more speedier version to use in real life since where Rapid Box Duo uses velcro for everything (=attaching diffusion panels & grids) with 26” Rapid box you can simply pull/slide the diffusion panel & grid over the umbrella within seconds. And trust me when you get used to attaching grids and diffusions panels just by “sliding them on top”, you will start to hate how much hassle all those soft boxes that use velcro really are!

If you were to buy this one I would definitely recommend you to buy the Deflector Plate right away to kill that annoying “hotspot” your Speedlite otherwise will create to the middle. That will also allow you to use your Rapid Box as a Beauty Dish as well. Secondly I would say do seriously consider investing in getting a Grid for this Rapid Box. I used this 26” Rapid Box for years without a grid and when I finally decided to bite the bullet and bought one, oh boy did it change everything! It’ honestly makes a huge different to your images since it limits the light spread more than you could have ever imagined. So as much as you might like to save money and not to buy one, I would highly recommend getting the grid… I bought mine from US since UK prices were absolutely ridiculous, almost 2-3 times more what they cost in US. So getting one from US and paying all import taxes etc. will still leave you more money in the pocket than buying one from UK sellers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eine coole Softbox
Reviewed in Germany on February 19, 2015
