I purchased a high wattage sound system that now has a number of other devices connected to it. Things like mixers and CD players and MP3 players and a graphic equalizer a preamp and the like. I read online again and again that it's recommended that everything be turned off at one time rather than one component at a time. Its better for the circuits and the speakers and amps. At first I put everything on a high voltage power strip. With all the wires coming out of it, it was a pain to try and turn it on and off with my foot on the floor and an eyesore to have it where it would be easy to turn off and on by hand. I knew there were products that would allow me to use a remote to turn power on and off at a wall outlet so I started looking. A quick look and I found that there are very few that are rated to handle more than 600-800watts and I needed more like 1000watts. Of all the products I looked at this was the one with the best reviews that could handle the wattage I needed.

For me it has worked perfectly every time. If there where anything I would change it would be the remote. The remote is flat black and the buttons are flat black. Even the "On" "Off" labels under the buttons are the same flat black. If I were making the remote the "On" "Off" labels would be a reflective White or Gold. The "On" "Off" buttons themselves would each be a different color. I know thats not much of a criticism but when the phone is ringing and you need to turn everything off it would be nice if the correct button was completely obvious.

One of our garage doors would open during an electrical storm. I called the vendor, Overhead Door, about the problem, and the service manager was of no help. A Google search showed others have the same problem.

So, our solution was to buy one of these remote electrical switches for each door. When we leave, we close the door and turn off the power with the remote control switch. When at home, we flip the "vacation lock" switch on the wall control unit which prevents the doors from opening. Not all garage door wall switches have "vacation locks". If our units did not have "vacation locks", we could simply shut the power off with the remote power switches (when at home.)

After some research I stopped my choice at this unit and did not regret.
- this is real outdoor unit, just follow installation instruction properly to avoid water damage (water loop)
- it is powerful enough for most appliances (960 Watts)
- it has four adjustable frequency channels
- 150 ft range
- standard 12V battery for remote

Why four stars?

It does not have "on" light and not all people use this unit for Christmas lights.
It seems that unit is not UL Listed (OK for Christmas lights)

I purchased one of these switches in the fall of '09 to control lights in the back yard. It has been exposed to the elements (installed on windward side and gets all the rain) as it has worked flawlessly. Am now buying another for the front yard lights. Great product.

I bought three Carlon remote controllers a couple of years ago and they are wonderful. When I decided to reorder, my orders page in Amazon directed me to this product instead, the Westek RFK306LC. When I decided to review my Carlon controllers, the review button on my Amazon orders page also sent me to this review page.

THIS IS NOT THE SAME PRODUCT. The originals were each the Carlon model HW2190 Heavy Duty Remote Control. The specs of the Westek do not appear as good as the Carlon. The Carlon is an extremely reliable device and will work up to 150 ft away. From reading the reviews, the Westek may be a lower quality unit with much shorter range. The two look different as well.

If Amazon is putting the reviews of the Carlon and Westek items together it could explain the wide variation of ratings. I cannot give a high rating here although I would easily rate the Carlon at 5 stars. If you can find the Carlon, buy it. I won't risk reordering from Amazon although it would be interesting to test the two units side-by-side.

I could not measure the phantom load (parasitic power waste)of this device using the Kill-A-Watt meter.
So, I scanned it with my IR heat sensor pistol. Only a couple of degrees above room temperature.

I use this device to shut down my power-wasting home-entertainment center.
The TV & cablebox etc use about 40 watts when in standby. And that's 70% of the time.

Cons:
The cablebox has to re-boot each afternoon, but that's not a real problem
with a little planing.

No problem with the RF remote. Works better than IR remotes. No need to point it,
or even be in the same room.
The hw2190 has very high power handling capability for the price. Over all, it's a good product.

I needed this right away and when it arrived it had something rattling inside. Not wanting to risk my electronics I decided to open it up. Inside I found a long piece of soldering wire trailing from the hot side (black) 120V wire laying across a capacitor. The device also had a failed relay -- quite possibly from the wire laying across the capacitor. Needless to say I can't return it now but be advised that my unit was poorly manufactured and inoperable. But my curiosity needed satisfaction.
NOTE: I worked on electronics systems on military aircraft and I also have an Engineering degree --- I wouldn't advise you try what I did unless you know what you're doing!
