I've enjoyed reading this. It's always refreshing to read something that has strong and coherent arguments and is informative of how much Western civilisation has suffered from globalism and other various attacks on its integrity.
An amazing book. We can only hope many morepeople will read it. We need an awaawakening to the Cultural Marxist Ideology that is destroying western civilization. If we don't wake up the west will die a slow death and become a Socialist Marxist State. Maybe it's destiny? There is no where to run. This ideology is impregnated into our peoples psycological existence. It's almost become a religion. I don't know if we can stop the train, but this book is a good start at recognizing what the problem is.
This book is hard to rate. The first half is good, the second half is largely about art, literary art and visual art, film and such, essays on art and art criticism. If there's one thing I don't care about, or even take an active disinterest in, it's art and art criticism, so the second half of the essays are 'as useless as teats on a bull' to an antiaesthete as I am. Completely irrelevant to someone who has less than no interest in art.
First part of the book is four stars (the speeches weren't edited for publication so they ramble and meander like a speech, using rhetorical devices unsuited to print: when you publish speeches, you must edit them -- please edit them -- to conform to the standards of print media); the second part to me is one star; I have to skip anything that has that much talk of art in it; it's more boring than the genealogies of the Bible to an atheist, and that's saying something.
Three stars overall, rounded up from 2.5 due to the recognition that my anti-aesthetic (or complete lack of aesthetic) and dislike of artistry makes me, along that line as along most others, an outlier.
An absolutely extraordinary book by a wonderful thinker and speaker. I only regret having not learned about Jonathan Bowden till after he was dead. We had a mutual friend (actually two or three) who had coincidentally died a short while before, and it was in Googling around and finding eulogies for the friend that I found Jonathan's name.
Essentially, this is a collection of incisive and humorous speech-transcriptions and essays from a traditionalist-conservative perspective (and I'm sure Bowden and others would object to that characterization). The description/dissection of the Frankfurt School is superb. The reminiscences about 'Angry Young Man' Bill Hopkins, the mystery intellectual of Ladbroke Grove, are definitive.
A great joy to read, although occasionally a transcribed sentence is difficult to comprehend. Jonathan Bowden was an instinctively brilliant speaker, able to come up with insightful analogies and explanations "on the fly." But though such in-person rhetoric makes perfect sense to the immediate listeners, it does not always make for clear prose, in the absence of gestures and facial expressions. Therefore every other page has at least once sentence which I had to reread several times before I could grasp its syntax and intent.
Theres no doubt that Bowden was a huge intellect; His contribution to the world was nothing short of massive. I will say, however, that this is the kind of book that will not appeal to anyone in search of amusing right wing punchiness that you would find in the work of Milo. Bowden was a philosopher and aimed his thoughts at those who had a predisposition towards great depth. It is, therefore, a hard read. Bear in mind that this book is a series of transcriptions of his speeches - speeches which were given quite off the cuff. As you read these pages, you find Bowdens brilliant mind jumping creativity from subject to subject. You may well be hypnotized by his genius or pushed away by the apparent chaos. His ideas are hard hitting and profound in a Nietzschean line, traditional with hints of Evola, right wing in every way.
The statement, "... we Europeans face-in particular the guilt that so many of us have, to the point that the great majority of us feel morally condemned for simply asserting our absolutely normal and legitimate interests in controlling societies we have established and dominated for hundreds and, in the case of Europe, many thousands of years." This says it all. It is amazing that in America you can have any racial support group with the exception of White Europeans. Blacks for blacks, Jews for Jews is all acceptable. However, Whites for Whites is not only considered racist, but in most cases outlawed? Who wrote these rules?
The world was lucky to have Bowden, and his departure was much, much too soon. This book is a great place to start for anyone looking for a well-rounded introduction to the man.
