I am running multiples of these WD Red Pro 6TB drives (WD6002FFWX) in a large (and newer) Asustor NAS device. They are performing flawlessly so far in a RAID 10 configuration. The included five year warranty for these Pro drives is a nice additional benefit.
I highly recommend WD Red Pro drives for their intended use with NAS devices.
So, to summarize, this is a 6 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 128 MB cache 5 year warranty Western Digital Red.
I was concerned that a 7200 RPM drive would be noisy. I cannot hear this drive. It is wicked fast at over 200 MB per sec. when reading and writing from my Samsung Evo 950 M.2. I have attached a screenshot of a speed test. This drive is only about $30 cheaper than a similarly sized Western Digital Black, but is very similar performance characteristics. I have a couple of large capacity external drive so I expect this to be the last spinner I will ever have to buy.
But it has been years since multiple catastrophic failures so I thought I would give them another chance..
I Bought 10 of these and have been beating them up with some heavy 4K editing/encoding/rendering workloads for almost a year and they haven't so much as blinked ! My impression of WD has been revised!
Note: Amazon advertises the 4TB PRO drive as a 64MB Cache drive (as of 2/7/2018). The 4TB PRO drives are 128MB cache, not 64. The 2TB are 64. Zoom in on the drive labels in their photos and you can see the cache sizes in the top right of the label.
The drives definitely seem to perform very well and have great access times and transfer speeds. Right out of the box you will be looking at 3.63TB of storage, not 4TB. For those that are unaware how that works, it's normal and correct. One thing I have noticed with these drives is that they are not completely silent. I do hear a slight noise as it accesses the drive and then it's silent again.
I will be using this drive for activities that require continuous access and reading / writing almost 24/7 of large data files.
I used 4 3.6TB Western Digital HDDs to build NAS in RAID 5 initially. Used the NAS to backup my files and used it very few times a year (more writes than reads). It was shut down most of the nights. Still WD drives started failing one by one. Luckily Western Digital has excellent service and replaced one of the drives in the warranty and another one just out of warranty. 3rd drive failed very recently as showed in the picture. The drive was run for ~21500 hours approximately and started to fail with more than 500 bad sectors. These sectors showed up while I was rebuilding/repairing Drive 3 (replaced by WD RMA). I added a new Seagate Ironwolf drive recently to review it against WD. So far it is good and running a lot more cooler (less heat) than its WD rivals.
07-28-18 update, yet anther of the 4TB (WD4002FFWX) have failed, bad sector count =15, getting anther RMS from WD now. Now three have failed, on 11-13-17, and 01-19-18, and now 07-28-18.
