Bad power supply

I bought this drive in April 2008 to use for backups. I used it maybe 10 times for a total of about 25 hours. The rest of the time it was stored, unplugged. About a year after I bought it, the power supply failed. I had to call customer support and ask for a new one. As of May, 2009, they're out of stock and WD doesn't know when they'll be getting more. It will cost me $21 to replace (1/5 the cost of the original drive). They claim there was a "bad batch" of power supplies and that the problem has been fixed. We'll see.

UPDATE (August 2009):

I have been trying for months to get a new adapter. Every time I call WD tech support, they tell me the same two things:

1) They just shipped out the last one
2) They will get more in 7-10 days

I don't believe them when they tell me this, because they also tell me these three things:

1) I can't preorder a new adapter and have it shipped when they get one in stock
2) They won't contact me when they get one in stock
3) Maybe I should check computer stores to see if they have any adapters that might work

At this point it is clear that they are just stringing me along and that I am stuck with a 500GB paperweight. I won't be purchasing another WD product.

Well, for the price, I thought it was worth getting this hard drive. WD is a well reknown brand of hard drives and this one, so far, has performed up to its reputation. I just took it out of the box, plugged it in and that was it. No formatting was necessary, no setting up necessary, it just works right out of the box.

I must say though that I've only had mine for about a month. No problems yet

Warranty (worthless), yea right, if they spoke English, I might have been able to return it. Useless customer service!

I would never purchase this POS again or anything by Western Digital. Another customer lost!

This is the first external hard drive I have ever owned but i've used countless differant ones because I wanted to be absolutely sure it was right for me.

This puppy is pretty impressive, not only is it a great amount of storage for such a low price but it's so dam rugged I feel like I could run over it with a car and it would do more damage to the tires then to itself.

It does get a little hot but nothing to extreme and I REALLY put it through it's paces when I first got it (alot of backing up and such).

I would recommend this to ANYONE looking for really any amount of storage because for the price it is fantastic.

I needed something to backup my files, mostly pictures and music. So I bought this external drive. Easy to hook up, on and off switch so I can just leave hooked up and use when needed. I have had for about 3 months and have backed up a few times with out any problems, not as fast as my internal hard drives, but adequate speed.
