I will say it again these are USED HDs.
Get a tool that checks the Smart Data like Crystal or smartmontools and check any RE3 you buy. I bought a drive from a different vendor and it had over 19,000 hours and Smart data showed it was reporting errors so they pulled it from production and then sold it on Amazon as NEW!
No where does this seller / listing say 'USED' or Refurb or Remanufactured....
Yet that is what you'll get when you by this...
Basically you are getting a good drive with some warranty left, mine were manufactured July and September 2010, so about 16 to 18 months of warranty left from Western Digital, no smart errors, and they look absolutely brand new...
But they are absolutely NOT new or overstock...
EDIT: AMTECH Offered full refund, so I bumped them up to 3 stars... Their supplier sold them as 'New', so they stepped up and gave refund for shipping also and sent shipping label to send back...
Hence, which is it.
Sounds like a good price if and I mean if you know what you're buying because I'm not too sure that they even know what they are selling
This HDD was designed for servers and RAID configurations specifically where the recovery time needs to be minimal. Some cheap RAID enclosures will fail to recognize a normal HDD sometimes or drop the RAID just because of the time that sometimes the HDD stops responding. Not the case with RE class, never had any problem regarding the RAID, just the amazing high operating temperature (which by the way is just normal for RE class). I keep my RAID enclosure always open and I always turn the power off when not using it.
The noise is just fine, slightly below the average noise of a comparable HDD and no funny noises like grinding or anything like that.
Mine came with 5 years warranty straight from WD. Don't buy it just for average applications, or if the enclosure is not well ventilated. For daily usage/storage in NON-RAID configurations just use WD BLUE class HDDs, they stay really cool and when not used for a while they self-park saving your money while making no noise at all.

2 problems. First is it won't initialize, which is why it is being returned. Second is the manufacture date 5 years before purchase date implying it is not new.Published 12 months ago by john walsh
