WD Caviar Green Hard Drives – Cool and quiet.
The WD Caviar Green desktop SATA hard drives give you the space you need to hold enormous amounts of software, photos and videos. These drives make it possible to build high capacity, cool and quiet systems, while delivering the right balance of system performance and energy conservation.
Why you should choose WD Caviar Green:
WD Caviar Green hard drives provide high capacity storage while using up to 40% less power than traditional 7200 RPM drives. In addition, these hard drives are quieter and cooler than traditional 7200 RPM drives.
WD GreenPower Technology yields lower operating temperatures for increased reliability and low acoustics perfect for ultra-quiet PCs and external drives.
WD's IntelliPower technology delivers both significant power savings and solid performance. Additionally, WD Caviar Green drives consume less current during startup allowing lower peak loads on systems as they are booted.
Store up to 2 TB of photos, videos, music and files on a single drive.
- Adding lots of storage in desktop PCs or external drives and NAS devices
- Adding extra storage space for photos, videos and music
- Environmentally-conscious individuals seeking reduced power consumption
SATA 3 Gb/s interface - The industry standard and most common interface.
NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.
IntelliSeek - Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.
Desktop / Consumer RAID environments - WD Caviar Green Hard Drives are tested and recommended for use in consumer-type RAID applications. (RAID-0 / RAID-1)*
*Business Critical RAID Environments – WD Caviar Green Hard Drives are not recommended for and are not warranted for use in RAID environments utilizing Enterprise HBAs and/or expanders and in multi-bay chassis, as they are not designed for, nor tested in, these specific types of RAID applications. For all Business Critical RAID applications, please consider WD's Enterprise Hard Drives that are specifically designed with RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER), are tested extensively in 24x7 RAID applications, and include features like enhanced RAFF technology and thermal extended burn-in testing.
Leading the way to green hard drives - WD led the industry in creating a new category of hard drives that use less power and help reduce the world's energy demands one computer user at a time. These drives consume significantly less power than standard drives spinning at 7200 RPM. All WD Caviar Green drives are lead and halogen free, resulting in less pollutants getting into our environment. Beyond the product level, WD's green initiative goes even further focusing on recycling and improving the cleanliness of the air, water and land in the locations surrounding WD facilities.
Upgrading your drive is easy - WD Acronis TrueImage, available as a free download on the WD Support site, enables you to copy all your data to a new drive so you don't have to reinstall your operating system to get all the benefits of a new drive. Note: Bare drive does not include any cables or mounting hardware.
The WD advantage - WD puts our products through extensive Functional Integrity Testing (F.I.T.) prior to any product launch. On average, each new product goes through 600,000 hours of testing. This is the consumer version that includes a SATA cable. The OEM version Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD20EADS is only a bare drive. Unless you need handholding, the OEM version may be a better buy. The only reason I got this one was that it was on sale at Best Buy for the still expensive early adaptor price of $[...]. Unless you have an immediate need, wait a few month for the price to drop.
The drive mounts easily with the included screws. Due to the non-standard sideway disk cage of my Gateway PC, I have to cut off the useless stub on the cable in order to close the cover. Although my Vista PC refused to install the software from the included CD, Vista's tool works just as well. Formatting such a huge drive is an overnight operation. Copying files from the old drive takes another few hours. After nearly 2 months of use, the disk worked flawlessly and quietly. It is fast enough as a second data only drive. As for the claim of low power, I have no way of measuring it.
As I wrote earlier, the consumer version includes the SATA cable with the funny stub, 4 screws, a software CD that cannot be installed on Vista, and some instructions that you can download from Western Digital. Whether you should spend the extra dollars over the OEM version is up to you.
This drive deserves a 5-star rating, except for its high initial price.Read more ›
In the last few years, I have had 12 Western DIgital Green Drives fail. Until recently they have been replacing them under warranty (up until the 3 year mark), but now are refusing to replace them, claiming since they were "GASP" installed into a computer the warranty is null and void!
Yo, Western Digital, does installing gasoline in a gas tank also void the warranty on the gas as well as the vehicle?
If you have been following the tech news, the WD Green drives are probably the worst quality and highest failure rate of all drives, and the "Green" aspect is supposedly a lower power consumption, (which really boils down to lower performance) and unfortunately, a lower quality that leads to a shorter lifespan.
What good is a "Green" drive when you have to put 2 or 3 into a landfill during the less than 3 year lifespan of what should have been one hard drive's lifespan?
This is neither "Green" nor helpful.
AVOID WESTERN DIGITAL DRIVES, "GREEN" or otherwise - They are neither "Green" nor useful for very long, AND THE COMPANY IS NOW DOING EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO DENY WARRANTY CLAIMS.
So I wanted 4 drives to put into my DNS-343 4-bay NAS. I wanted to max it out, and the only 2TB drive DLINK recommended was the WD20EADS drive. With no other choice, I gritted my teeth and ordered 4 of them. Before subjecting them to the 20+ hr RAID 5 setup process in the NAS, I hooked them up to my desktop and ran the LifeGuard software Extended Test on each of them. 3 passed, 1 failed. Selected the "Fix sector" option, but it failed AND generated a nice windows hard-drive failure box. Then tried using LifeGuard to write zeroes to the failed drive, but after a few minutes it too failed.
So now I'm going through the RMA process to send back the bad drive to goharddrive.com, at my expense. Yea.
Thanks, Western Digital, for burning me yet again. And no, I don't feel a 75% success rate is acceptable.
The product arrived quicker than I expected, and I am happy with the results.

Green drives from WD seem a good deal slower than Black. Next time I'll spend the little extra money and buy the Black version.Published 14 months ago by H0gR1der
