Great backup solution for laptops and desktops!

I wanted this to back up data from a laptop equipped with USB 2.0 ports, not the newer USB 3.0 or above. While USB 2.0 drives were common just a couple of years ago, they're getting harder to find now; and a USB 2.0 port doesn't deliver adequate power for some USB 3.0 drives. The drive capacity, 320GB, is less than the laptop's internal hard drive, but entirely adequate for data-only backups.

I also use various-capacity versions (in USB 3.0 trim) of these drives to perform image and incremental backups of my desktop machine. Backup drives don't have to be incredibly fast, since they can work in the background. These little drive are MUCH more convenient than DVDs or even Blu-Ray discs, and don't take up much space in between-use storage. I've been using these drives for years and never had a failure; in fact, I've never had any WD hard drive fail.

I have always used Western Digital for my Hard Drives in the computers I make. I have only had 1 fail out of dozens and some are still going strong after many many years. I am currently using some WD Raptors personally and Western Digital is top notch. I got this item to do backup and to hold data in case I was swapping hard drives or moving files around from laptop to laptop or desktop to laptop. I plugged it into my desktop and it automatically detected it. I then messed around with the software installed and I can honestly say I skipped using it; I do everything manually.

The capacity is decent and the thing is small and does not take up a lot of room. I put it into a drawer when it is not in use and is only a couple inches high inside the case.

There is only one drawback. I wish the usb cord that came with it was a little bit longer, I plug it in and it does not go that far so I have to leave it on top of the computer instead of putting it on my desk, but other than that the drive is awesome.

Serves the purpose

I got the drive, plugged it in an it worked. Hurray! However, When I tried to copy onto it my first folder, I continuously got an error. I looked up the error in many places, but could not find an answer. Nothing in the manual. Nothing in the KB. So I had to call tech support and waste my free 30 days of support from that first call. The problem...the drive is formatted for FAT when shipped which allows Windows and Mac to use it. You need to reformat it to NTFS in order to have large files copied onto it. You think that the troubleshooting section or instructions might say something, huh? Tech support knew the problem the second that I started to speak - which means that they get many phone calls with this problem. Since then, no more problems. It would be nice if they offered a 7,200 RPM version. I expected it to run a little faster as I decided to use this instead of REV drives for take home backups from the business. The great thing about it is the 320GB which REV won't have for long time yet.

Very easy to use with Mac

I bought this hard drive for Media Storage (Mac + Win) and also as a backup disc for Time Machine. The good news is that it comes in FAT32 format, which OS X can read/write. The bad news is that Time Machine requires the backup disc to be in HFS+ format (FAT32 or NTFS won't work).

However, this is easy enough to fix. I launched Disk Utility in OS X and partitioned the drive into 240 GB as FAT32 (or as MS-DOS format, as Disk Util calls it), and 80 GB as HFS+. Took less than 5 minutes for the whole thing. So now, I've got one partition for time machine, and another for my media.

Fine Print :

1. In partitioning the drive, it formats the drive first. So any free utils that come with the hard disk are erased. Not an issue for me as I didn't intend to use any of the free software. But anyone trying this should be aware of it.

2. For anyone thinking about doing the same thing, note that FAT32 does allow both Windows and OSX to read/write without the need for a 3rd party software. But the downside of FAT32 is that it doesn't allow a file size larger than 4 GB. This isn't an issue for me (I don't expect to come across many files that are larger than 4 GB each). To avoid this issue, you could create one partition in NTFS (instead of FAT32). Once you do this, you'll need a 3rd party software so that OS X can read and write to the NTFS partition. I've heard good things about MacFuse (though I haven't tried it myself).

Other thoughts...
- Nice and compact
- Fairly silent
- Pretty short USB cable (can be irritating for some. I prefer this to having a long cable dangling around).
- Wish it came with a soft case/cover (that's what I'm looking to pick up next).

These kinda suck. I've bought no less than 4 and only 1 still works, and only occasionally at that. I'm not the most careful when it comes to my portable hard drives, but these seem to give out as soon as they experience something of an impact.

The Seagate I bought to replace the one that still works has proven quite robust. I've occasionally dropped it, I've packed it away in bags when traveling, and it still works like a charm. I'd stay away from these.

I have no compliant about the storage capacity of this product, what I had problems with was the connection cord to the computer. Only after a short period of use, the USB connection just wouldnt stay put and most of the times if I were trying to watch a movie or navigate on the drive for that matter, the connection would drop. You had to keep absolutely still or not touch the cord at all in order for continuous use.
