UPDATE - 3/14/2012
My hard drive crashed roughly 8 months after purchasing. My Macbook was operating fine and then I tried launching firefox. Firefox would not launch and I tried a few more times...nothing. then I tried to restart and that was that for my hard drive. I took it to the Genius bar and they diagnosed the hard drive. I returned home and swapped the hard drives and voila, my computer is working again. So, I was pretty upset with WD. Now, I was poised to lose all data from my HD update back in June until the present.
I call up WD and they are extremely helpful and friendly. the first rep I got I couldn't understand, but got a supervisor. At that point I told them that I understood they limited their warranty and that they do not cover data loss, but that I never was informed of this at purchase. The rep then said that if I send my HD in that they will pay another company to do data recovery, load it onto a new WD HD and send it back pre-loaded with all of my files that I had on it. I WAS SHOCKED that they were ready and willing to do this for me. I was really pleased as I thought they would say sorry about the failure and that I can either accept a replacement or buzz off.
Well, it turns out I probably don't even need to use this offered service. It turns out that I had a hard drive enclosure, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AAVA08/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details that I tossed the crashed hard drive into and figured it was worth a shot to hook up to my now functional computer. After about 45 minutes (I had literally forgotten that the crashed hard drive was still hooked up) my finder/ explorer finally recognized the disk. Once I realized this I immediately connected an external HD and began copying files like a mad man. Now, WD only has to replace the hard drive, which they are more than willing to do. And while I still dislike the fact that you have to "pay" for the replacement if you opt to have it shipped to you prior to sending yours back, I think it is great that they even offer this (once they receive yours they refund the payment). Most companies won't ship anything until they receive the defective product.
Furthermore, in regards to performance, I wasn't happy my HD crashed. However, I am very happy with how WD handled the situation. It is this type of customer srevice that builds loyalty and confidence with a company. So, my outlook is much better with them. While my HD did crash, it happens every once in a while for unknown reasons. Maybe it is in manufacturing, maybe a well placed ding to my computer, who knows.
The drive had performed very well up until this point and I look forward to installing the replacement. The drive was not any louder or warmer than the OEM hard drive that came with my 2008 Black Macbook. I am still happy I ordered the product and my experience has really made me happy that I purchased a WD. Maybe it would not have happened with a Seagate or Fujitsu, but who knows what their response would have been had it happened. I can not attest to this though.
The drive itself is a Western Digital Black, sold worldwide. These drives are reliable, and essentially silent. If you have any noticeable noise or vibration it's nothing that should be there. Back up your data and think about filing a warranty claim.
I say these drives are reliable, but they're still mechanical devices with moving parts. That means they can be damaged by mishandling, especially by poor packaging and shipping.
I've posted a pic of the drive I received, as it was packed. In a small box with some foam peanuts.
This packaging might look kinda-sorta OK until you realize that first the drive was put into the box, then a handful of foam peanuts was dumped on top of it. Result: one side of the drive is protected only by a thin white wrapper, and by the cardboard box itself. Which is to say no protection at all.
If the metal top of the drive receives a hard blow, the bearings can be knocked out of alignment. These bearings are tough, very tough, so they might yet hold up for several weeks or months before failing, but misaligned bearings always fail.
On the circuit board (bottom) side, a hard blow can cause cracks. Not in the board itself, which is near-indestructible, but in the very thin copper traces that form the circuit, and in solder joints. This can cause maddening intermittent problems, and ultimately the circuit will fail.
When I saw the packing method GP Thunder had used I at once thought to send the whole thing back. But aside from the trouble and expense, foolish me, only then did I notice the hefty 20% restocking fee for returning non-faulty items.
I don't know how you prove to GP Thunder that a drive likely to fail within a few months is faulty now, so instead I downloaded Western Digital's drive checking software and ran it. The drive I received passed with flying colors, so I'm going to assume no heavy corners fell on my drive while it was being sorted, or while it was in a truck somewhere. Which means I'll just hope for the best, and running on hope deserves no more than one star.
I hate to give a good product a bad review because of the seller, but the facts are what they are. It seems all Amazon vendors are trying to reduce expenses these days, especially shipping expenses. I can't blame them for that, but the packing method used for delicate mechanical items doesn't seem like a good place to save pennies.

The WD Scorpio hard drive operates at 7200 vs 5400 or less for most other hard drives. If you are working with video, such as Final Cut Pro, the faster the drive the better. This was a major factor for us in deciding between many of the hard drives available. Also, I have many external hard drives, all are Western Digital and they have worked just fine (knock-on-wood).

All in all a great purchase and the fact that is 7200 rpm is also a bonus!
On powering up, this drive emits a continuous low-pitched drone which does not subside until it's powered down. This is amplified by placing the computer on a table and can clearly be heard in a moderately quiet room - this is accompanied by continuous vibration along with a less irritating but audible whir.
All of this is rather unfortunate as the computer was actually noticeably quicker; in all benchmarks and reviews that I've read this drive beats similarly spec'd drives from Seagate and Hitachi hands down.
I have ended up relegating the drive to an external caddy case and have replaced it with a Hitachi 7K500 500GB Hard Disk Drive drive (similar spec) which is much, much quieter - almost approaching the silence and comfort of my original drive.
Depending on the application this could be a good drive to have, but in my opinion it's just far too noisy for use in a laptop.
