Both the outside box and inner static-proof bag were U-Line brand, which sent up a red flag that these might be used drives. And I was right. They are advertised as new but they are refurbished. I work in IT and I check every piece of technology that I purchase thoroughly, including (and especially) hard drives. Apparently the seller doesn't know that hard drives equipped with S.M.A.R.T. technology record information about the hard drives, including usage time, errors, etc. This drive had a power-on count of 23 and power-on hours over 5000. Although I do not feel it was intentional for this Seller, Storite, many sellers use deceptive practices in their descriptions of Hard Drives they sell. The problem is that these drives are "NEW" according to their description, but they do not come with the consumer protections one would normally expect because they have no warranty whatsoever from the manufacturer. Further, they are described as "OEM" which literally means "Original Equipment Manufacturer", and generally means an item is the original item made by the original manufacturer (which in this case is Western Digital). However, over the years this term has come to incorrectly mean that they were "bare" drives originally sold to some OEM Computer manufacturer or wholesaler, not by the actual OEM part manufacturer to an authorized NEW ITEM retailer. Therefore, they have no warranty whatsoever from the original manufacturer. The reason they have no warranty is that these drives were previously sold, in bulk, to some wholesaler or computer manufacturer, and Western Digital therefore shows them as being purchased long ago (in 2006 in the case of the one I ordered), so they have no warranty from Western Digital at all despite being "NEW" (as in, never used). These sellers are not "authorized retailers" and are now selling them after having obtained them through some other party, not directly from Western Digital the drive manufacturer, so although they have never been used they are considered previously sold, with no warranty, by that manufacturer. I only found out this information, after purchasing my "new " hard drive, when I contacted Western Digital to register the drive for its warranty (from WD, which I thought would have been expiring five years after my purchase date). I then contacted Storite (technically Indal Enterprises in Calabasas, CA), the Amazon Seller from which I purchased the drive, to try to get this straightened out. I spoke to an extremely friendly, personable, and helpful individual named "Kevin". After explaining the multiple frustrating emails and phone calls I had been required to make before finding out the disturbing facts regarding my non-existent manufacturer's warranty, and the conflicting warranty information on their/Amazon's website listing for the item, he provided me with the following information/assistance. He gave me what I felt was (1) a very honest and heartfelt apology for my trouble. (2) a very understandable explanation for the lack of a clearly accurate description of the nature of the drive and its warranty that they (Storite) were providing, and (3) the promise that his company was working with Amazon to get a much more thorough and clear description of the nature of the drives added to their listing. He explained that these drives are new, never used in any manner, and still completely sealed in their original, sealed anti-static bags, as originally sold by the manufacturer. He also volunteered to extend my warranty to the longest time noted anywhere on the listing because time periods conflicted on different areas of the listing. Further, he then (4) gave me his personal offer of additional support which fully provided me with full and complete satisfaction. The price was great, the drive worked extremely well, and since I know that WD makes great, fast, dependable hard drives, I'm thrilled. Kevin even gave me another identical new WD hard drive, at a GREAT price, to keep as a "backup" in case my new one ever fails in the future. With this process, the software guides you through making an identical copy of your old hard drive, then transferring that identical copy to the new hard drive (as long as the new one is at least as large in storage capacity) before you use it. This means your new hard drive will already have your operating system (like Windows XP, Vista, 7, or ???) on it, along with all of your other programs and data files, complete, without having to re-load ANYTHING to that new drive individually.
