Ok, this is for PS3 owners/upgraders. This drive fits the PS3 wonderfully and runs nice and cool with no issues. For the price you can't go wrong. I have the 40 GB PS3 (Spider Man 3 bundle) and have the data (saves + install) of about 10 games and I was running out of space. I did a lot of research of the various SATA 2.5" laptop hard drives available. I researched all the various brands and compared reviews and prices vs size. I came to the conclusion that a 500 GB drive for $100 is a steal given the extra space gained, so that's the direction I went. Of all the brands, the Western Digital Scorpio Blue series seemed to have the most positive reviews all over with the least amount of reviews stating drive failure, so that's the one I chose.
Installing was extremely easy after backing up my data. The longest part of the whole procedure was backing up and restoring the data. I won't go into details, but I do recommend the app another reviewer used to format an external drive larger than 32GB in the FAT32 file system. It's called "fat32format". It works extremely well and extremely fast (less than 4 seconds for a 120GB external drive). Just follow the directions and you're good. I did this because in order for the PS3 to recognize the external drive it has to be formatted in the FAT32 file system. As for the procedure of upgrading the PS3, just google "upgrade PS3 hard drive" and you'll get tons of tutorials and videos.
Now here's something important: A lot of people who upgraded their PS3's and saw xxx/465 GB free after upgrading are not realizing that this is not the fault of the PS3. You could put the same drive in a laptop and it will have the same 465GB. This is because manufacturers advertise a gigabyte as something different than what windows or the PS3 recognize. Manufacturers see a gigabyte (GB) as 1000 megabytes, and 1 megabyte (MB) as 1000 kilobytes (KB), when in actuality windows sees 1 MB as 1024 KB. So that's where the unaccounted lost space goes.
So as of now, my opinion is that this hard drive is a great choice for PS3 upgrades. If you don't want to drop a bill on the 500GB version they also have the Scorpio Blues in smaller sizes for reduced prices. I like this hard drive so much I may replace my laptop hard drive with one.
The installation was cake but you need external drive to back up your ps3 data so that you can transfer your save game etc. after installation of the hardware.
as for the drive, it's quieter than ths stock ps3 hdd, data transfer speed is not noticeble but it is generating less heat for sure. the stock hdd made some clicking noises here and there and this one is absolutely quiet. maybe a few clicks here and there... Overall an excellent hdd.
ps3 hdd upgraders: I used 1x 16gig usb flash to back up my data, then also used another 2gig usb flash drive to download the system file from sony for re-setup of ps3 OS. This was an unexpected hassle. the upgrade and reinstallation is pretty much automatically done but you still have to wait for a while. the whole process took me almost 2 hours. I have not bought any online games off ps3 store but I was told that if you bought anything you can re-download them for free (maybe up to 5 times?). If you have questions on upgrading hdd, just leave a post, and I'll reply.
I have the 80GB MGS4 Bundle and not that many demos, videos, mp3s, and pictures to start with, so I figured it was a good idea to upgrade after reading the Reviews listed here and on other PS3 web-sites. 320GB would be perfect for me I figured for now and in the forseeable future. I am NOT a "computer tech" or even anyone with the slightest experience in working on computers/gaming systems, so this item sounded like just the thing for me (AND IT IS). By only using pages 16-18 in the PS3 Safety and Support guide, a simple 4GB USB to back up my data, and a small Phillips head screwdriver, I successfully backed-up, removed, changed-out, re-installed the hard drive(s) of my PS3 and restored all of my PS3 data with NO PROBLEMS whatsoever! Couldn't be any easier, in my opinion... While I'm sure there are other hard drives out there for the PS3, this one is perfect for me and my PS3 needs. A BIG thanks goes out to all of the previous Amazon.com Reviewers for the info!

The Hard drive is a standard 2.5" size and comes with all the necessities for installation and shipping, so no real comment on that. I got to work in putting this into my Macbook Pro 2011, installation was fairly simple using on-line guides and forums. It does become a little trickier with Macbooks as you have to be careful not to break the Logic board and make sure all the correct screws are out (videos are your friend here)
The setup was fairly straight forward to. you have to use Apples disk utility to install and then you're away. I've marked it down to 4 and not five because the drive is perfect, but I noticed a small speed impact compared to my older official Apple drive, it's insignificant for daily use, but it was something that as observed when running tests.
Happy with the price, a lot cheaper than official Apple products, fits nicely, looks like a normal drive and no one would know any difference
Eventually even Vista told me I was in trouble and needed to do an urgent backup. Fortunately I had my personal data backed up elsewhere. But my laptop had become unusable. I was lucky it would even still boot. So using another machine I looked up the disk details with a view to getting a replacement.
The original was 160 GB but as I looked around for the same type (Western Digital Scorpio) I realised I could get a 320 GB disk for very little difference in price, so I did. I installed it the day it arrived, with no problems, other than the ridiculously large number of screws that had to be removed from the bottom panel of the laptop. (Don't forget to completely unplug the machine, and remove the battery, if you do this!)
As I was switching to Windows 7 anyway, and had a Release Candidate version on DVD, I installed that, and have never looked back. The disk works fine. No sectors reallocated. Good performance statistics. Except for one, and that is not the disk's fault. It is that the disk runs a bit over 40 C, typically up to 43 C depending on the indoor climate, and the Ashampoo software warns me about it. But that is really a fault in the design of the laptop, in not allowing good air-flow. And yes, that could have an impact on the life of the disk.
The only problem I had before ordering the disk was deciding what kind of interface the laptop used, ie PATA or SATA. I guessed it was SATA, and confirmed this by looking for web sites describing the connector. I suppose I need not have worried, but I just like to play safe. Most if not all of the Scorpio variants on offer are SATA these days.
I did not know how much freedom I had to choose other brands of disk. However the Scorpio disks seem to be popular and cheap. The new disk does what a disk does. What more can one say?
Before you backup you're PS3 you must sync your trophies by going to the trophies menu and clicking triangle.
Once done you will need an external HDD to back up all your data, mine came to 40GB which took just over 1 hour then at the bottom of your console you remove the HDD cover, unscrew the screw and pull out the drive. Then unscrew 4 screws around the cover and take out the drive and replace with the new one. Screw everything back in and click the HDD back in place. Screw in the blue cap screw then start up the system. You will either be asked to reformat or have an error message asking you to have the latest firmware on a USB stick. You can download this direct from Sony and put it onto your USB stick/external drive. You must create a folder in caps "PS3" then inside that another called "UPDATE" then inside that put the downloaded file.
Once you have done this the HDD will reformat and the console will be like it was from new. Bypass all the information regarding set up then once you are back in the main PS3 window go back to system backup connect your external HDD and click recover.
Once this has been done you will be back to the same as when you started but with lots more memory.
Singstar songs for me did cross over as well as games but everything for Little Big Planet never did but you can redownload everything from the Playstation Store.
It arrived promptly, even though there was a postal strike, and was packaged very securely, in fact it was a little like pass the parcel as i unwrapped it from several boxes.
It took no time at all to clone my 80GB HD onto this HD using an exteranl caddy, which i also purchased at the same time, and once this was done it was a simple matter of swapping drives and re-booting system, Job done, (although to make sure everything was good i did use the vista OS disc to repair any possible errors).
In no time at all i had cloned my old HD, which was now full, to this cheap and cheerful HD, saving all my personal data in no time at all.
It is the first time i have used Western Digital but i do know it won't be the last.
A year on and this HD is still running as well as it did on day one... (i hope i haven't jinxed it here then).
It is still quiet and quick to use so i am still a happy chappie with this year old purchase...
one thing though, all though this is normal behaviour for a WD, so WD tell me, it does make the odd loud click when shutting down, but after contacting WD they tell me that this is the heads settling in to protect the Drive in case of sudden falls.
The first thing I noticed was that the drive is much quieter than the old drive I had, and although the speed is the same it seems a little faster. The drive is also a good size in terms of storage, and even with my laptop configured (so far: Windows 7 Ultimate, SQL Server 2008 with all features, Office 2007 Enterprise, Visual Studio 2008 Team Studio, Firefox, and according to the folder properties 494 JPEGs and 724 MP3s) I have 258GB free.
Oh, and if you're looking at the picture of the drive on here, don't worry - it does actually have a cover on it and is fully enclosed.
Finally, I must say the delivery was excellent too, as I ordered the drive on a Friday evening and it was with me by 10AM on the Saturday morning. Impressive!
A good upgrade drive for laptops.
