A very reliable USB drive

I purchased the Western Digital 120 GB USB hard drive in 2008 to use to back up about 100 GB of documents and photography files. My main concern was reliability, and since I had been very pleased with other WD drives (both internal and external) that I've owned, I went with the WD drive.

During its more than four years of service, the WD drive has performed flawlessly, writing thousands of files and keeping them secure. It's a remarkable product, considering its size and weight. I've been impressed enough with the drive's performance that I've since bought two more of the WD Passport drives. One of these drives has traveled with me on many trips, and even with the abuse that it gets from baggage handlers, driving on rough roads, and assorted mayhem, still works perfectly.

I can highly recommend the WD USB portable drives to anyone who needs additional hard disk space for their PC, and with its portability, it makes a great back up drive.

MY WD PASSPORT FAILED! AND I FIXED IT FOR CHEAP!!

I had this drive for a bit longer than a year before it stopped working. One day I plugged it into the computer and just got a 'clicking' noise, as if it almost powered up but didn't make it all the way. Neither a Windows or Mac would recognize it. Damn.

Like a fool, I had put a bunch of music on the drive, and deleted the files from my computer's hard drive. I didn't envision it failing. Now THOUSANDS of songs were lost...or so I thought.

Just recently I upgraded the HD and RAM on my Macbook. In this process, I found out that you can take an old laptop hard-drive, buy an external enclosure for less than $5, and use it as an external HD.

I figured the same process might work for dead WD Passport. So just yesterday I pried open the WD enclosure, took the old fittings off (the piece that connects the HD to the USB cable), put it into the new enclosure, and VOILA! It worked! My music collection is saved!! No need to pay any large amounts of money for professionals to extract the files!

Hopefully this review will help some people out - if it helps one person save money and worries I'll be happy.

The hard drive inside the WD Passports is a called "2.5-inch SATA Hard Drive ". It is the same type of HD they put in Macbooks, and perhaps Windows laptops.

If your drive has died just search for a "2.5 sata external enclosure", and I your problems may be solved.

Exceptionally Slow

I bought this device to store less important data to free up space on the hard drive of my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 8100.

It was easy to connect to the USB port, but from that point forward, I was less than satisfied. To start with, there was no instruction manual with this drive and the information in the "Quick Install Guide" that was offered on the software was so minimal and self-evident that it was pointless.

I clicked the WD Sync icon and followed the steps that led to the synchronization and encryption phase of the set up. That was at 3:18 in the afternoon. This part of the process, uninterrupted, finished sometime after 9:00 the next morning. In other words, it took 18 hours to synchronize and encrypt 37 GB of data. I realize this has something to do with the age of my computer, but that is still a very long time. So be prepared for long waits if your computer is not relatively new.

To test this product, I sent several files from a folder in My Music to the Recycle Bin and attempted to replace them with files from the WD drive. Again, I'm doing this without an instruction manual. Upon opening the WD window, I found icons to (1) synchronize again (no, thank you) or (2) "Copy to PC." Oddly, the default setting for copying files to my PC was to check every folder on my computer, so in order to send the files of songs back to their original folder, I had to uncheck every other folder or file on my computer, which took well over half an hour given the slow speed of the WD drive in responding to my commands to uncheck.

When I had succeeded in transferring the files, I discovered they weren't in the original folder under My Music and they weren't the files I had highlighted, but rather all the files in the folder. I eventually found them in a special WD folder automatically created under My Documents.

So the storage and transfer of documents did work, but it is a very time-consuming and somewhat illogical way of storing and retrieving documents. A manual might have helped me avoid any mistakes I may have made along the way or provided a better method of doing this. When I have a vacation, I may experiment with the process again. In the meantime, I have some comfort in knowing my data is backed-up on an external hard drive even though it is buried in a labyrinth of software that makes retrieving it a discouraging chore. Good luck.

Edit: I have spent more time trying to get this drive to function, but it is incomprehensible. Trying to get files from the drive to my computer is such a time-consuming mess I can't begin to explain the problem. This is the worst computer-related product I've ever purchased. On the other hand, if you have papers on your desk and an open window, it does a very good job of keeping them from blowing away. For $83.
