Product Description

Enjoy the dual benefits of warm lighting and convenient climate control with Westinghouse's 78603 Petite hugger-style ceiling fan. Stylishly compact, the 30-inch low-profile ceiling fan mounts snugly to accommodate low ceilings and smaller size rooms (up to 80 square feet) such as bedrooms, kitchens, three-season porches, media rooms, and other cozy spaces. Its six-blade design features a whisper-quiet, high-performance 153-mm-by-9-mm motor, with a three-speed reversible switch that allows for customizing air movement--run the fan counterclockwise in the summer to create cooling airflow, and clockwise in the winter to re-circulate warm air that's risen towards the ceiling. Even more, the ceiling fan features a single light fixture that operates on one candelabra-base, globe-style, 60-watt bulb (not included) and that comes surrounded by light-diffusing opal mushroom glass that casts a rich, welcoming glow. A 12-inch lead wire, light kit, matching pull chain, and installation hardware are included, and the unit can be adapted for use with a dimmer switch (sold separately). Available in two color options: white with reversible white/whitewashed pine blades or antique brass with reversible walnut/oak blades, the ceiling fan measures 30 inches in diameter by 12 inches high and carries a lifetime motor warranty and a two-year parts warranty.

Save Energy With Westinghouse Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans can be an energy-saving, "green" addition to any home, adding more value than many homeowners realize. Most ceiling fans are very efficient, using only about as much power as a 100-watt light bulb. Used properly, ceiling fans can save you money in winter as well as summer: up to 10 percent in heating costs and up to 40 percent in air conditioning costs. And placement of a ceiling fan is important. Peak energy savings are realized by placing ceiling fan blades 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling and 7 to 9 feet above the floor.

Year-Round Comfort and Efficiency

For maximum energy savings as well as comfort throughout the four seasons, Westinghouse ceiling fans include a reversible switch that allows the ceiling fans to be used during cool or warm weather. In the summer, keep your home cool by running your ceiling fan counterclockwise. In the winter, run your ceiling fan clockwise to re-circulate warm air from the ceiling, eliminating cold spots and drafts.

This fan puts out a LOT of air on the high and medium speeds, as you can tell by the wind noise picked up by my camera while making this video. Not to worry, it's the mic on my camera. The fan is fairly quiet, but isn't SILENT like a Hunter Fan. There is a low-grade motor hum but I like the sound as it helps lull me to sleep.

This fan replaced a 21 year old fan in my 10 x 13 foot bedroom. I wouldn't install this fan in any larger room than the measurements I listed, because on a muggy night, even with the central A/C running, I have to lay right under the fan to feel the air flow (on the lowest speed).

Fairly simple to install, I put the blades onto their brackets ahead of time so the job went smoother when I got around to installing the fan itself. I'm not sure what the blades are made of, I can't tell if they're pressed wood like MDF or maybe they're plastic, but be careful or you will scratch the finish on the fake "wood-grain" side of the blades easily.

The highest watt candelabra bulb this takes is a 60W, I got the clear glass bulbs to put out the maximum amount of light, these are easily obtained at any of the large big-box hardware stores, you may even be able to find the candelabra base in a CFL bulb too.

The chain fobs shown in my video are not included, I took those off my old ceiling fan. I'm very surprised they don't make any noise even when the fan is on high. (The fan does come with fobs, but they are ugly: one has a picture of fan blades, the other of a light bulb.)

I bought this ceiling fan for my kitchen, which is 7 feet by 9 feet. It's a perfect fit for that size room. The fan was easy to install and performs wonderfully--plenty of air flow and reasonably quiet. I noticed that some of the other reviewers complained about the noise, but I just didn't experience that.

Now to the light. It's limited to one 60-watt incandescent candelabra bulb. That is hardly enough to light even the smallest room. If you're wondering why the light source is so small, you can thank your federal government for deciding that it was their job to dictate what kind of lights our ceiling fans can use. Check out the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT 2005) for more information. You can get around this limitation by using a 100-watt equivalent CFL bulb (produces 100 watts worth of light but only uses 23 watts of energy, so it's perfectly safe to use in a socket rated for 60 watts.) I found some of these bulbs at my local big box hardware store. You can find these bulbs online by searching for "sylvania 26904" (the big box store should show up in this search). They're basically the standard "twisty" 100-watt CFL bulbs but with a candelabra base. One problem with using these bulbs, however, is that the glass globe supplied with the ceiling fan will no longer fit, so you'll need to buy a bigger globe. A replacement globe can be had for about $6 also at your local big box hardware store. The one I bought was a "Litex 6-inch Clear Vanity Lighting Glass". Just about any globe should work, just make sure that the neck size is 3-1/4 inches and that the distance from top to bottom is about 6 inches.

Also, for anyone who's worried about fan blade clearance for kitchen cabinets or other room obstacles, the distance from the ceiling to the lowest point on the fan blade is 7 inches. This was an important measurement for me in acquiring a "hugger-style" fan.

This fan works great! I installed it last night. It spins very quickly on its highest setting, and it moves a lot of air for its size. The bulb socket is a miniature Edison base rated at 65W, so it may be a bit dim for larger rooms.

I hooked this fan up to a fan/light control switch on the wall, so I wanted to remove the pullchains. To do so, perform the following BEFORE MOUNTING THE FAN and AT YOUR OWN RISK:
* Remove the three screws that hold the light socket over the housing, and pull open the cover.
* There are a bunch of wires and wire nuts that attach the fan speed pullchain, fan direction switch, and light pullchain together.
* Unscrew the fan speed pullchain switch and the light pullchain switch. Yank all the wires out of both switches.
* The black and blue wires go straight through the fan to the other side - they're coming directly from the source.
* To bypass the light pullchain, connect the blue wire to the black wire of the light socket.
* To bypass the fan pullchain, you'll need to fix the fan at the highest speed. Connect the purple (speed 1), yellow (speed 2), and orange (power) wires to the black wire (the source wire, not the light socket wire).
* Keep the red wire connected (that's the speed signal).
* Make sure to use wirenuts on all exposed connections!
* To tidy up the modification, I'd suggest yanking the pullchains out of the pullchain switches (tug hard!), then re-inserting the switches in the housing just to provide a clean (albeit pullchain-less) look to the outside.
* Re-attach the housing cover, making sure the indentation in the cover fits over the fan direction switch.
* When mounting, remember that the blue wire is for the light and the black wire is for the fan.
