Great Computer Monitor, Not That Good As A Real TV
on June 1, 2007
Pros: A DVI input on LCD TVs nowadays is getting scarce and it's amazing that the Westinghouse has 2 of them. The picture improves when you calibrate using Apple's Display Calibrator in Mac OSX, text is sharp and large, and colors are great. This LCD should be purchased if computer usage is your primary goal. Also, the TV will automatically switch to the equipment that you want to use: for instance, if you are watching a DVD and then you turn on your computer, then the TV automatically switches to the DVI input and displays the computer screen. Most other TVs require you to manually switch and select the correct input. Another nice feature is that the remote control has dedicated buttons to switch directly to the input you want, rather than having to cycle through a list. The remote control is better than I expected. Another plus is that the monitor will go into sleep mode along with your computer automatically.
Cons: Picture quality for video sources such as DVD and our HDV camcorder is not as good as I had hoped. It is not that sharp, colors are not accurate, there is a lot of motion blur even though the panel is rated at an 8ms response time, and contrast is just okay. Also, the sound from the built in speakers is poor and thin. After reading other reviews, it's possible that the poor video picture I'm seeeing is a result of using the Component Video inputs rather than the HDMI. Unfortunately, that's a problem with this TV because in my experience with other TVs, Component Video quality should be nearly as good as HDMI. Also, I notice that there is a yellow-green tint when displaying gray tones on the monitor but white is still pure white. This may be a defect.
Notes: As a basis for comparison, I have a 58" Panasonic Plasma, a 60" Sony XBR SXRD, and a 10 year old 65" Sony XBR HDTV. The Panasonic Plasma has the best picture quality from video sources, but the 10 year old Sony XBR we have is still better than the Westinghouse for video and HDTV through component video inputs. But as I stated in the title, definitely buy this as a computer monitor. It is astonishing.
