Product Description
Amazon.com
Equipped for bare floors, carpet, and above-floor cleaning, the 12-amp Westinghouse Wired Deluxe vacuum covers a houseful of needs with an accessible straightforward design. The vacuum is built without bags or belts, so collected dirt stores in a roomy and washable dust bin complete with a foam filter. Fine particles are efficiently trapped by the machines long-lasting HEPA filter (though the companys promise of seven years of use per filter does seem too good to be true). The 13-1/2-inch-wide nozzle is adjustable for four different heights of carpet, and the power switch gives you the option of turning off the brush roll to protect bare floors. An indicator light helpfully signals if the brush roll is rotating. For high-up spots and attachment cleaning, the vacuums handle converts to a cleaning wand with a stretch hose. This is a clever design, but not seamless--you have to wrestle with it a bit. Once extended, though, the hose is markedly long, adding a full 10 feet of reach. Onboard attachments are also handy--including a universal cleaning tool, a crevice tool, a floor nozzle, and a dusting brush.
Westinghouses structure on this vacuum is strictly un-gimmicky. The body has a back-to-basics feel and doesnt bother with the sport car aerodynamics common to models of comparable power. In spite of this simplified approach, the machine does come with some handy details, such as quick-release cord hooks, powerful headlights, and a recessed carrying handle. --Emily Bedard

The Westinghouse WST1551 retains the Fantom Cyclone's true Hepa final exhaust filter systen. It is rated as good for up to 7 years with periodic cleaning which I found to be about double what I got from both of my Fantoms Hepa filters, which were also periodically cleaned. The new vacumn has an additional 3 to 4 inch diameter, higher quality filter with a very resistent to tiny partical passage 1 inch thick foam insert added to the breather cap of the collection bin. The collection bin and foam filter is washable. The collection bin dirt collection retainer system is now hinged making it far easier to empty, clean up or even sanitize by washing than others. Other than being blue, rather than black, and having clear hoses instead of black, I have not noted any other differences. The Fantoms were made in the US and Canada while the Westinghouse is made in China and retails for approximately 50% less! As of June 2004, K-MART, and perhaps others, are now selling a series of low cost and quality vacuums labeled Fantom that should not be confused with the old Fantoms or the Westinghouse WST1551 Wire Deluxe.
Due to severe allergy problems, I have purchased and modified many different vacumn cleaner systems over the years including some of the best cleaning and lowest exhaust emitting particle cleaners tested by Consumer Reports and found my current Fantom Cyclone and now my improved Westinghouse WST1551 Wire Deluxe Vacuum the best for my needs. I ordered my first one in October 2003 and am so satisfied with it that I ordered a second one in July 2004, one for the house in general and the other for a special dog sleeping area. The other brand vacuum noted below has been relegated to the garage the last 9 months and will be trashed once the newly ordered one is received.
My other relatively new, highly rated, heavy and well known brand upright will no longer be used. It is so dirty and messy to empty due to its so called Hepa filter. Its Hepa is nothing more than a thick non particle air passing paper loosely folded into a round tube anchored behind a screen in the dirt collection bin. Final exhaust filtering is done by a multilayered, tighly woven and slightly sticky filtering composite which still allows dust smell to pass through it.
