This little peeler is truly a simply thing at first glance; clean lines, no whistles and bells and no knobs and things to turn and adjust. It is meant primarily for peeling asparagus and it does a wonderful job for what it was meant for. Now you can peel other vegetables with this little peeler but still and all, it is best for asparagus. And this is a good thing for us because we eat a lot of the stuff; both what we raise, what we pick wild and what be purchase in the store.
Now asparagus, when it gets past a certain point in maturity, develops a tough outer fibrous covering. The younger the plant, the better the eating. But extremely young plants are not always that easy to find and we have found that the more mature stalks are quite good if the outer covering is removed. This simply little peeler does the job better than anything we have used.
Now I read the review posted here by Tinfoot and he/she pointed out that there is a proper way to hold this little tool and an improper way. I made the same mistake Tinfoot did at first and grasped the whole peeler in my hand. That is the wrong way to do it. Look at the box. Use just your thumb and one finger, placed lightly in the indentations provided and the peeler works oh so much better.
This little thing is sharp so keep your fingers out of the way of the blade. It is very, very well made and its simple design should last for years and years. It is machine washable but like all my kitchen cutting tools I prefer to hand wash this one. Cleaning is an absolute snap.
This peeler does include a small spike at the side to be used to remove those bug bites and blemishes which are always present on the stalks you grow or pick wild...we do not use insecticides in our garden and the farmers sure don't use it in their drainage ditches.
This is an excellent peeler which was supplied by the seller in exchange for an honest review and that is what I have given you...an honest review.
I also find the simple addition of the little rounded spike at the edge quite efficient for getting out the icky blemishes. However, one form factor needs to understood from the onset- you don't grip this with your hand wrapped around the handle (like I did at first). Initially I thought the handle way too large for small hands and borderline awkward for my medium hands. After peering at the back of the box, I realized I was holding it wrong. You put the tips of your thumb and forefinger in the ergonomic dips on the handle and hold it firmly yet lightly. A dramatic difference in comfort.
-- I received this as a complimentary review product with the aim of hopefully elucidating features and drawbacks that may help you ultimately decide what fits your needs and budget best.
This does work in only one direction, since the blade is only on one side of the peeler. You can see me attempting to use it backwards in my video, since I was trying to show it for the camera. But it's pretty natural to hold it the right way if you're just using it over a sink.
It has nice handles, and a spreader bar, so that there isn't too much pressure on the blade. I ended up holding it different than I think you're supposed to, but I liked that there are a few ways to hold this.
Also, it does a great job of peeling.
+Great if you're not very strong
-Only works in one direction
-Takes some time to get used to
*Westmark gave me this peeler to review*
I do wish it had a cover but otherwise it's amazing. It's also stainless steel, great for longevity and easy cleaning. I am so impressed, this is now my favorite long vegetable peeler.
