There is so much I want to say about Voodoo Child, but very little that I can without invoking spoilers. Voodoo Child features an adroitly written story, tight, stylized artwork, and a Creole panache which would send even the most eloquent linguist reaching for their dictionary. Here we have complex characters, logical motivations, clever twists, and a story which leaves you thinking. The titular character, his slave background, and a desolated post-Katrina New Orleans all provide a contemplative platform from which the story launches its ideas about humanity, evil, justice, as well as the human machinery involved - from the victims to the carpetbaggers.
Voodoo Child isn't a terribly long read, but it is an entertaining one. Nicolas Cage fans will appreciate knowing that he influenced the subject matter to reflect the ideas and events that are important to him - and if you're not already a fan, this novel just might make you one.
