It is extremely important to allow a pathway for air to escape the bag in order to get the best results. I had to redo a few venison steak bags because air kept getting trapped at the bottom because of the way I packed the steaks initially. Took me about three bags and 12 sets of steaks before I had them laid out in the bag for optimum air removal. If the sealer was any stronger it would suck the liquid from the item you are packing into the vacuum chamber.
I tried to reseal a 4 pound bag of broccoli we purchased from the warehouse store but the unit would suck the ends of the bag together and trip the pressure switch so it would seal before any air was removed. You must used good quality vacuum bags to get the best results. I purchased the Weston pre-cut bags (6x10 & 8X12), I would not recommend the 6x10 bags, they are too small. I had a few other sealing bags laying around, they worked but not as good as the Weston bags.
The unit works extremely well on re-sealing bags that were previously frozen in addition to new bag. The unit produces a very good seal but for best results it is a good idea to elevate the bag with the food you planning on sealing. Getting the bag at the same height of the sealer's vacuum chamber produces the best results. The only thing I would have liked to have seen on this sealer is a cutter for the rolled bags.
It is pricey but we like to hunt and fish so we wanted something that would preserve our catch, this unit does the trick - no more freezer burned perch!
Some things I found... (I used Weston bags)
1. Beans, rice, and cheese seal great on the auto seal setting. Also have done partially used onions, ginger and spices.
2. Pasta sealed better when I chose to manually seal it - the auto seal sucked too much air.
3. Liquids are tricky.. Can't really get the air out for obvious reasons... But I was able by using a slightly larger bag and the manually sealing to store meatballs and sauce.
4. Use a piece of paper towel inside at the top of the bag to seal juicy or marinated meats.
This is a great sealer and I would recommend this for purchase.
