I use reasonably fresh Russet potatoes about 4.5 to 5.5 inches long and I peel them before cutting. I usually cut 6-8 potatoes per use and the entire process from start to finish (including peeling the potatoes and cleaning the machine) takes less than 10 minutes – actually considerably less than 10 minutes. Cutting 10 potatoes takes less than 2 minutes. Disassembly, cleaning and reassembly no more than 6 minutes. It truly is a breeze to use and clean.
I think the issues people reported have to do with using potatoes with exceptionally thick skin or older potatoes that become much more difficult to peel with time. If you’re going to try to cut through leather-like potato skin you’ll probably need to use a lot of force and you probably won’t be happy with any cutter. If you’re going to dig out the dinosaurs that have been sitting in your potato bin for two months and think you’re going to have a good experience, your wrong. Russet Potatoes are probably the least expensive foods you buy. Please use fresh potatoes. And if you’re going to peel them before cutting – and you should – buy a “Y” peeler – you’ll get the job done in 1/3rd the time and never use your old fashioned peeler again.
Here’s another hint. Rinse your fries several times in cold water and when the water is clear, add some salt to it and let the fries soak for a few hours or even over night in the fridge – just keep them covered with water. Of course, you’ve got to dry your potatoes before you fry them and most people will tell you to spread them out on towels and pat them dry. I found a $5.00 (honestly) plastic salad spinner at Walmart a few years ago and I use it to drain and dry my fries – it’s amazingly fast and easy to use and you won’t have wet towels to wash. Follow these guidelines and you’ll wonder how you ever got along without the Weston 36-3501-W.
I am going to spend the extra money and try and find a commercial grade cutter without plastic if possible.
