Do far so good. Processing lots of tomatoes

Do far so good. Processing lots of tomatoes
This press seems to work fairly well for processing tomatoes which is the only food I have worked with so far. I have probably produced about 40 quarts of tomato juice (simmered down to close to 20) and nothing has broken. It is definitely faster and more efficient than the traditional crank strainer that sits on top of a pot. Still, to get maximum extraction, expect to run the pulp back through the strainer 5 or 6 times. Also, if processing a lot of tomatoes, take and scrape the outside of the screen a few times with the edge of a silicone spatula and at the end to remove a lot of thick saucy / pulpy material so it doesn't go to waste and it helps open the holes of the screen. Rotating the drain piece lets you get to more of the screen for this. After reading some comments about the auger shaving off material, I started out by coating the auger and the screen with olive oil to act as a lubricant until the actual tomato pieces worked their way through. Even with this, there is some abrasion present on the very end of the auger as seen. Since the instructions called for quartering, I went ahead and blanched and cored the tomatoes. Why not make it a little easier on the strainer. Still, there were times when the crank became harder to turn and there was a creaking sound coming from the unit. (This may have been when the auger was abraded). I also could see the entire head unit flexing during operation which has me concerned that the head may separate from the base at some point. It is not clear what metal this unit is made from but it seems similar to a cast zinc alloy similar to what a lot of small metal cast pieces are made with. The auger could certainly be made a little longer to better capture the pieces in the head. There could also be a small cap on the other end of the auger so that pieces of tomato didn't get pushed up into the inside. The mounting is so-so as the suction cup method isn't going to hold except maybe under the most optimum of conditions. The clamp method works but is tedious to use when the overhang distance on the counter is limited. Plan on cleaning this immediately after using so the tomato pulp pieces don't become glued to the surfaces especially the screen. I found to clean the screen, it works well to hold it under running water and using the straight side of a silicone spatula, rub the surface of the screen vigorously. This eventually dislodges all the pulp strands from the screen. Then a good semi-stiff brush inside and out cleans the rest off. Make sure and clean and dry the small metal shaft promptly as if left wet, it will start to show rust where the snap ring is located. It easily cleans off but keeping it from forming is better. Also, expect to get some permanent tomato staining on the white funnel and drain piece. Overall, a decent product that will hopefully hold up for a while.

I got this gizmo because my garden produces tons of tomatoes and I wanted an easy way to strain them for making my own sauces, soups, and etc. This Weston strainer works perfectly for as advertised for the job. You drop chunks of tomatoes into the top, turn the handle, and the sauce/juice comes out in the chute on the side while the skin and other bulk gets pushed out of the waste funnel at the end. The tomato liquid you get is clean and free of debris but it isn't thin or runny like water or pure juice. It has enough texture or consistency to be considered almost a sauce even before you start cooking and reducing it. This device does exactly what I hoped it would do.

I also like how easy it is to crank the handle, even with my old and arthritic hands. Very little force is required to drive it, and I can run 100 tomatoes through it at a time with no difficulty.

I do have some critical observations, but since this thing works so well for such a reasonable price these are just observations only and not criticisms.

The assembly instructions could be improved. Although it is written in good English - is NOT some poor translation from Chinese - the instructions need a bit more detail and better illustrations showing how to put the thing together. I say this being someone who can build a working laser printer entirely from scratch given the service manual and all the individual parts. Putting this tomato strainer together required studying the picture of the assembled product on the cover as much as the written instructions and parts diagrams. Once you figure it out the first time, though, you should have no problems taking it apart for cleaning it after use and then putting it back together again. It's not at all complicated, but better instructions would make it even easier the first time..

My other observation is that the plastic clips in the end of the waste funnel, which snap onto the screen to hold it in place, seem adequate when new out of the box, but being plastic, and having to detach and then reattach it for cleaning after every use, I suspect that this may be the weak link that will eventually break in this otherwise fairly sturdy and robust machine. If it does break, I will update this review to say how long it lasted.

All in all, I think this is a great product for its price, easy to use, and works exactly as advertised and hoped for.

I made tomato sauce last year and it was such a messy job, I almost didn't want to do it again. This machine works so well, and so easily that I loved the entire process. Less mess, less stress. The directions to put it together the first time we're a bit tricky, but once I did it the first time, I was able to get it easier the second time. I love that this product helped my entire family be able to help make sauce. My kids loved helping. I saved the box for easy storage. I will definitely be using this for years to come.

After 2 horrible reviews of a similar Italian product I bought this machine. Yes it’s 3x more expensive but it is incredible!
I am in the process of making tomato sugo right now and had to stop to write this review immediately 🤣
Just a quick note, when you receive the product and open the box it really smells of factory/new. It’s the rubber suction cup bottom and nothing that a quick wash can’t fix. I think if you store it in the box you will have this smell for a while but that doesn’t bother me.
