Forewarned is forearmed.
when they updated their catalogue to the W series and UMPRO series 2 things changed:
1- product assembly and quality of workmanship because awful, I had a umpro 50 that was out of the box working well but with real gaps between the faces of the ear buds: this is mainly because of bad assembly and using glue in a wrong way
2- customer services is worst than zero: when my UMPRO suddenly had one ear dead, I shipped it to Westone, in few hours they replied that they cannot fix it and it is because the humidity due to the gaps I mentioned above, have eroded the product. they offered me to buy a new one, and gave a me price as expensive as Amazon ( including shipment it was actually 20$ less than amazon, eaning my whole product that I paid around 700$ for, is now worth 20$ for them)
Accordingly, if you can find a used w4R or um3x GO FOR IT even with no warranty, they used to be built like tanks. but NEVE BUY a NEW WESTONE PRODUCT
I owned a pair of UM2 but I lost them a month ago. I have been watching this and the westone 4R for a long time now and one night I finally clicked the buy button.
Unlike UM2, if you look at the picture, there is a layer of plastic covering the cords near the earphones which are supposed to allow you to put it around your ears. I understand the design but that's something I still could not get used to. I guess I might need to bend it more as it is too rigid now.
I've done my homework and researched in tons of forum. The earphones should be able to get most of its potential on an iphone. That was also a huge factor why I chose UM3X over W4R. However, it only sounded ok on my iphone 4 and even my UM2 was much clearer. Well, of course, my UM2 have been burnt in and this is still new, I was still super disappointed. However, when I plugged the earphones in my desktop, with a head box II amp, it was a delightful experience. I am not an audiophile by all means but the clarity of the bass and high was something that I never experienced from UM2.
Expensive? Yes! Disappointed? Yes. Regret? No. I wanted something that could end my search for earphones of even higher level(custom etc.). I guess UM3X can do that job for 3+ years. I had my UM2 for 4 years:)
By the way, the UMs are super comfortable to wear and out of the earphones that usually get compared within this price range, (Senheiser IE80 etc.), I feel that Westone earphones has the best shape and that leads to the best noise cancellation.
For tips, I don't really like comply as they get dirty so easily and they are too soft in my opinion. A great alternative might be this: http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Foam-SuperTip-Sampler-Starter/dp/B003TFEHMA/
It sounds better for me as they seal up my ears pretty well and most importantly, without sacrificing the comfortness().
I blame iphone 4 for the ok sound. I will get a portable amp for this gem or get a sony mp3 player(z series maybe) when I have the money.
Again, sorry for the poor english.
If you're going to invest in IEM's like these have a good clean source and source material (I'm using ALAC lossless files, line out, and a FiiO6 HP amp).
With sufficient clean power they will go extremly loud without distortion.
Sound is balanced from lows to highs. Bass is very much there but the instruments are rendered so cleanly it may be mistaken for a loss of bass on a first listen, but after burn in and lots of listening it's very much there, just not all muddied up! The highs are nice and clear and accurate. I wouldn't say they're tthe best feature though, I lisened to a friends now obsolete IEM's from another brand and they had crystalline highs. It's not that the Westones are lacking in any way, but in direct comparision there was a difference. Keep in mind this was one day after recieveing the Westone's and they were not burned in yet,
Overall these are the best IEM's I'VE ever had. I have a new set of over the ear Audio Technia ATHM50S that are highly rated. I may add a comparison down the road even though they're not In Ear.
