Today, Westone has expanded its in-ear product line to provide unparalleled sound quality for all on-stage musicians, as well as for casual listeners who want a high-fidelity sound experience.
Established in 1959 as a custom-fit earpiece manufacturer, Westone has become known worldwide as 'The In-Ear Experts.' From its roots of working with hearing health professionals to produce custom-fit products for hearing aids and protection, Westone has expanded into offering consumer audio products and is the world's premier designer of high performance in-ear musicians' monitors and earphones.
Westone became a master of audio technology as the result of requests from popular rock musicians in the early 1990s. They wanted the ability to hear specific instruments or vocals while on stage yet reduce overall stage volume to protect their hearing. As a solution, Westone created the first balanced armature driver in-ear monitor that became the standard for professional musicians.

Make sure you try all the eartips provided to find the correct fit and comfort for you. If the eartip is too small and doesn’t create a complete seal inside your ear canal you will lose low end frequencies. Choose the largest tip that is still comfortable for you. You may even need a different size tip for each ear. Make sure the right earpiece is worn on the right ear and the left earpiece on the left ear. The earpieces are marked, and when worn the cable should point to your front and wrap around to the back of your ear.

First, it's easy to get a really good seal in my ears. The thin sound tube seems to be reason, It allows fairly deep insertion leading to good isolation and consistent, comfortable fit.
2nd, I like the sound a lot. The bass is very tight and analytical with no bleed into the mids. It's also very flat with no obvious bump all the way down to the bottom. Low end extension isn't as good as the dynamic drivers in the RHA's, but I prefer the clarity of the W30s. Mids are very detailed and resolving. Each instrument seems to occupy its own well defined place in the sound and it's very easy to find texture I haven't heard before. The highs are laid back without sounding muffled or dark. It's easy to listen to these for extended periods of time without fatigue.
Overall I'd describe these as very analytical headphones with a flat sound profile except for the highs which are pleasantly relaxed. Very much a Balanced Amature sound with the associated clarity and detail, all the way to the bottom of their range.
I also read some other reviews with quality complaints, so I was a little concerned about that as well. I'm not sure what those who think the cases are cheaply made bought. My best guess is there must be some counterfeit W30s out there because mine seem well made. I can't speak to how he cables will hold up, but out of the box they appear to be high quality, though I agree the controller free cable is nicer.
Overall, an excellent pair of headphones which are worth with the insane price.
Sound - When you compare this to the W3, it is true that the over punch bass that was famous of the W3 has been toned down a bit; however, it is not to the point where the bass kick is gone. The bass is still there but it has been balanced with more accurate sounds. If you listen to music on your iPhone, I got the right amount of bass at 4 bars of volume with the W3. With the W30, to get the same amount of bass as the W3, I have to crank it up one more bar to 5 bars of volume. Overall the sound changes are very minor with the exception of the bass which you can tell has been toned down just a tad bit.
Mechanical – I believe one of the weak points of the W3 was the cable. I knew that it was only going to be time before the cable wires were going to fray. Thus, after using mines for 4 years, the wires finally came apart. I had no mechanical issues with the earbuds itself as they sounded fantastic; however, the wires are what killed my W3. Luckily with the W30, these wires are replaceable so if they fray you can just replace them. For individuals that are worried that the wire wrapping around the earbuds are going to be stiff, not to worry, the wire wrapping is super malleable will bend easily.
Overall – If you are still a current user of the W3 and thinking about an upgrade to the W30, my advice is I would hold off until your W3 dies before purchasing a W30. The sound difference between the two is so minute that I would not even consider it an upgrade. On the other hand, if your W3 is dead and you are looking to buy a W30, I would not hesitate to purchase a W30 as you can get the same bass kick by turning up the volume just a tad bit more. If you are new user thinking about purchasing a W30, I will say that the W30 is right down the middle between audiophile and casual listener. If you are a new user hesitant in purchasing these, I would say that these are well worth your money. After using these, it is going to be very hard going back to your old hardware. Is $300 expensive? Yes, but they are worth every penny and if you take care of them, it will last you a very long time.
I'm not good at describing sound properties, so I won't try. One thing I will say is that I love the size/fit of these. They are very light, and I feel like I am barely wearing anything when I have them on. By contrast, I tried (and returned) a pair of similar shure earphones. Everything about the shure was bulkier, both the earpiece and the cable, and I wasn't a fan of the fit. The Westones all around just feel much better.
I also love these for blocking out sound. When music is playing at a moderate volume, I can barely hear anything around me. Without music playing, they are decent ear plugs, but you can still hear your surroundings (which is nice, for instance, if you want to pause and hear what someone is saying, but don't want to take them out). After using on a plane, I don't think these are quite as good for noise cancelling as something like the high end Sony or Bose phones, but the audio quality from these is vastly superior.
