This book is immensely funny.
I love stories that have good, clean, situational comedy in them and this one fits that description admirably.
The first chapter starts out seriously enough but by the time I reached the end of it I was laughing at the slapstick comedy in it.
This is a really wonderful and satisfying story. I have read a couple of other books by the same author but I have to say that this one was the most exciting and thrilling of them all. I loved the three main characters; Clarence; Guthrie; and Kate. They were really well fleshed out and utterly believeable personalities, each with their own history, passions and flaws. I loved each one for his or her self. The story which is woven around them is brilliant and full to the edges with british stiff upper lip and a generous dollope of american western swagger and gumtion.
The plot for this story is awesome.
An english gentleman and his household servant; who had been dismissed from service to the family; are travelling to America to find the servant, Guthrie's, daughter whom he has never met. Take that and add red indians, war dances, horse theft, lynch mobs, gunfights, and chasing trains and you have an extraordinarily good book.
What happens to Clarence, Guthrie and Kate out west is as hilarious and slapstick as it is serious and dangerous. Brilliant writing.
The ending of this wonderful and exciting story was utterly satisfying and felt entirely right to me. I was cheering them to the end.
I actually read it in one sitting because I didnt want to put it down...I just couldn't help myself!
My only complaint was that it didn't last long enough. I wanted more, much more. Sadly it wasn't to be.
I love all the books I have read by Milo James Fowler. He is definitely an author to watch as his books stand out from the crowd.
A delightful audiobook that has some tense moments and moments of hilarity! One first sees Clarence as a whining spoiled English wealthy brat whom his former employee, Guthrie tolerates on his mission to find his missing daughter. By the end of the novel, one does witness Clarence’s growth into adulthood.
The characters were vivid and rich, the dialog realistic that made the story advance. The characters were off a bit – the Indians, the train conductor, saloon gals just don’t fit the usual mode. Actually, all the characters were a bit “off” in a thought-provoking way that made one look at stereotypes. If one is looking for a Zane Grey or Clint Eastwood or John Wayne type Western – this is not it! This is a fantastic, oftentimes absurdly funny western genre experience written by Milo James Fowler. Fowler is vivid and rich in his descriptions painting a clear picture. Fowler has provided an entertaining story of action and adventure.
The narrator, David Blufton, performed the novel expertly. He had a firm grip on all the characters and performed them very well. This was a great pairing of a narrator to a novel!
I found it fun. I listened to this audiobook laughing out loud frequently. A great audiobook for solid fun entertainment!
There were no issues with the production or audio of this book.
The plot perhaps relies a little heavily on coincidence - but that's fine; it allows everything to keep rolling along like a tumbleweed.
Fast moving and funny, an entertaining read.
