- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2023The Whale" is a deeply poignant and thought-provoking film that intertwines themes of redemption, isolation, and the power of human connection. Directed by the visionary Darren Aronofsky and featuring an exceptional performance by Brendan Fraser, this cinematic masterpiece takes us on an emotional journey that transcends the boundaries of conventional storytelling.
At the heart of the film is the story of Charlie, a reclusive and morbidly obese man who has found solace and companionship in the vastness of his own home. Brendan Fraser's transformative portrayal of Charlie is nothing short of extraordinary, capturing the nuances of a character burdened by past mistakes, longing for forgiveness, and seeking a chance at redemption. Fraser's ability to convey Charlie's emotional depth and vulnerability is a testament to his immense talent as an actor.
Darren Aronofsky's direction adds a layer of visual and emotional intensity to "The Whale." His signature style, known for exploring the complexities of the human psyche, is well-suited to this narrative. The film's stark and immersive cinematography allows us to intimately experience Charlie's isolation, the weight of his past, and the gradual unraveling of his emotional barriers. Aronofsky's storytelling prowess keeps us engaged, holding our hearts captive as we witness Charlie's journey unfold.
While "The Whale" primarily revolves around Charlie, the supporting cast delivers performances that complement and enhance the film's emotional resonance. Each character, from the compassionate nurse (played by an empathetic and compelling actress) to the estranged daughter seeking reconciliation, brings a unique perspective that adds layers of complexity to the narrative. The interactions between the characters are imbued with raw authenticity, evoking a profound sense of empathy and understanding.
The script, adapted from Samuel D. Hunter's play, beautifully explores themes of forgiveness, the weight of guilt, and the transformative power of human connection. It navigates the delicate balance between humor and heartbreak, eliciting laughter and tears in equal measure. The dialogue is poignant and rich with emotional depth, providing a platform for the actors to showcase their immense talent while delivering a profound message to the audience.
"The Whale" is ultimately a meditation on the human condition, reminding us of the importance of compassion and the potential for redemption even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. It raises profound questions about the nature of forgiveness and the impact of our choices on ourselves and those around us. By immersing us in Charlie's world and journey, the film invites introspection and prompts us to examine our own lives and relationships.
In conclusion, "The Whale" is a remarkable cinematic experience that showcases the power of storytelling and the capacity of cinema to evoke profound emotions. With Darren Aronofsky's masterful direction and Brendan Fraser's remarkable performance at its helm, this film weaves a captivating narrative that leaves a lasting impact. Prepare to be moved, enlightened, and inspired by this extraordinary exploration of redemption, isolation, and the universal human desire for connection.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2023This movie was hard to watch.
I saw it for the first time on opening weekend in the theaters. When I heard Brendan Fraser was making a comeback and then all the amazing scuttlebutt surrounding this picture, I knew I had to see it. I felt compelled to watch this man try and resurrect himself and his career with one last attempt at something truly great.
And he did it. He absolutely nailed it. With a cast of about four people, only one single scene in the whole movie not shot inside a crummy apartment, and main characters named after protagonists from Jurassic Park, Brendan Fraser was able to lift himself up via his incredible ability to tell a story and make we, the audience, believe.
The Whale is the story of a man who destroyed his life for love, and who lost that love, and who coped with his terrible grief by trying to eat himself to death. He pushed his wife away, his only child, his colleagues, his students, and everyone but one single friend who only remains loyal to him because of their shared loss. He pushed the whole world away and lost himself in addiction to food.
This movie, at its core, is about the main character finding himself again for one brief but glorious moment which allows him to reconnect with so much of what he stupidly threw away. It's about forgiveness, and regret, and each of us doing right by others in whatever way we can despite our past mistakes.
There are scenes where the food addiction is in full display, and I found myself literally on the edge of my seat, turning my eyes from the screen, bracing myself from the gut punch of Brendan Fraser's incredible performance.
It was worth every moment.

Hugo Cesar MartinezReviewed in Mexico on August 21, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Una Buena Actuacion de Brendan
Gloria J.Reviewed in Canada on December 30, 20235.0 out of 5 stars Sad but powerful movie
If you like action or computer animation in movies, (like Barbie or Marvel comic strip heroes, than this is NOT for you. If, however, you the viewer like an emotional packed taut script, smart direction, brilliant photography, exceptional acting than I say - this movie is for you! Unfortunately this is a negative "slice of life" yet more applicable than ever before. When one has extreme trauma, some people resort to excessive hoarding, drink, gaming, food etc. This smart movie does not judge. The story revolves around a man who is disullioned and melancholy, yet very astute and smart. He is aided and abetted by his friend who brings him food and offers solace. He (the protagonist) is trying to reconcile with his daughter (the antognist - also skillfully played) who only had contempt for him because he deserted his family for another man. The photography is brilliant as the "shots" were all indoor in one room yet very captivating as they shot around the sofa etc. all at different angles. This movie was a vehicle for Brendan Fraser's superb acting skills; probably one of his best roles. He truly deserved the Academy Award. They need to film more thoughtful, introspective movies out there; not everyone wants to watch/listen to junk dialogue with computer animation to make up for the stupid dialogue. Kudos to the movie studio and their decision to film such a smart, decisive movie that "packs a punch" with words not cheap graphics. Great movie!
JOAO CARLOS RINO BENTOReviewed in Spain on April 21, 20231.0 out of 5 stars Region A Blu-Ray
It's not clear on the product description, but be aware that this is a Region "A" blu-ray and will not play in European blu-ray players (unless they are multi-region).
MReviewed in the Netherlands on April 16, 20241.0 out of 5 stars Rating for the listing, not the film (IT’S REGION A)
I’m sick of sellers not being clear enough if a CD is region locked. THIS IS REGION A, SO IF YOU’RE FROM THE EU/UK, YOU CANNOT WATCH THIS FILM.
Such a bummer because I was really looking forward to this film. I hope this prevents someone from making the same mistake as I did.

Ruben HernandezReviewed in Mexico on August 23, 20235.0 out of 5 stars Muy importante, filmada en relación 4:3
