I really like the main characters—where one is fun and the other leans more towards awkward. Don't get me wrong, both are special in their own way its just that in a way, they complete one another.
To spend a day in a theme park, to me that is absolute bliss and would make me undoubtedly happy. Because I just love the thrill of roller coasters and the joy it gives me just for being in the area. But there are other people in this world who don't share the same feeling as I do when it comes to theme parks. Some fear it, some hates it and some even constantly think negative towards it. This story tells me that its okay to be afraid of certain things and its okay of how long it takes to get over it.
After reading this story full of awe and intrigue, I feel like shoving this story into other readers faces and read it.
Now, let's talk about Gemma, who's afraid to ride the Ferris Wheel when she assumed someone died in that monstrosity. But it's her birthday and she wants to try out something as her quest for YOLO (you only live once). Then she meets a boy wearing a long sleeved shirt dress with a necktie looking uncomfortable and cute at the same time. Suddenly her birthday slowly unravels and becomes FUNTASTIC!
Once again, I fell in love with this short story from a talented Filipina author, Dawn Lanuza. Early this morning, (more like early dawn), I read one of her short stories Breakup Anniversary and it was awesome. It really started my day. Then I learned it was her birthday yesterday so I decided to read her other book, What About Today and again, I am impressed. Aiden and Gemma's story is quite short but loaded. I love love love it!
It's these simple short stories that really got me swooning and gushing these days. Ms.Lanuza's writing is lovely, lyrical, liberating. It allows me freedom to dream and enjoy life's pleasures through anecdotes and even pick up lines. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I am sure I'll be reading more of her books soon!
It's only seven chapters and yet the author manages to craft a believable meet cute i guess i'd call it?
Aiden and Gemma spending the day at his family's amusement park was just adorable and I would love to see more of them, and their budding friendship/relationship :)
What About Today is, just like the title suggests, a story that happened within 24 hours. It's actually my first time to read a 24-hour story. You would think that it would be a story with a lot of plot holes because let's face it, it ain't easy to write a book that happened in a day only. I honestly can't imagine how the author would include all the essential parts of a story and leave the readers satisfied with it but HOLY COW, Dawn Lanuza managed to do all of that. She's a genius, I tell you. I've read all of Ms. Dawn's books and I loved them all. I was a bit anxious of reading this book because like I said, I just can't imagine how a book with a 24-hour time frame leave me satisfied. But I guess I shouldn't have doubted the author's writing ability. It was done flawlessly. It made me a very satisfied and happy reader who wants to read more of Gemma and Aiden.
What made this book different from the other works of the author was that I had an instant connection with Gemma and Aiden--the main characters in the story unlike her previous books that I've read. They're very likable characters and easy to have connection with. In fact, I can see a glimpse of myself in both Gemma and Aiden.
I loved how the book ended! I couldn't ask for a better ending than that. Though I must admit that it made me want to read more of them but at the same time I don't want to. If you're in need of a light and unique (I haven't read a 24-hour story so I shall call this unique) book the What About Today is the right one for you. Seriously, read this book. Or any other books by Dawn Lanuza because they're just amazing! I consider Dawn Lanuza as "Queen of Contemporary Novels." *bows down to the queen*
