The protagonist, Amanda, played by Marlee Matlin, finds herself in a fantastic Alice in Wonderland experience when her daily, uninspired life literally begins to unravel, revealing the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what we consider to be our normal, waking reality. She is literally plunged into a swirl of chaotic occurrences, while the characters she encounters on this odyssey reveal the deeper, hidden knowledge she doesn't even realize she has asked for. Like every hero, Amanda is thrown into crisis, questioning the fundamental premises of her life ? that the reality she has believed in about how men are, how relationships with others should be, and how her emotions are affecting her work isn't reality at all!

The unlikeliest cult hit of 2004 was What the (Bleep) Do We Know?, a lecture on mysticism and science mixed into a sort-of narrative. Marlee Matlin stars in the dramatic thread, about a sourpuss photographer who begins to question her perceptions. Interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors are cut into this story, offering a vaguely convincing (and certainly mind-provoking) theory about... well, actually, it sounds a lot like the Power of Positive Thinking, when you get down to it. Talking heads (not identified until film's end) include JZ Knight, who appears in the movie channeling Ramtha, the ancient sage she claims communicates through her (other speakers are also associated with Knight's organization). What she says actually makes pretty good common sense--Ramtha's wiggier notions are not included--and would be easy to accept were it not being credited to a 35,000-year-old mystic from Atlantis. --Robert Horton

I'm currently working on my PhD in Physics, and find it pretty irresponsible to use incorrect and inadequate descriptions of quantum mechanics as a means of justifying some fake science version of spiritualism. The uncertainty principle and other poorly understood phenomena such as entanglement aren't magic generators of whatever reality we dream up. More importantly, quantum mechanics in and of itself is not a self consistent theory or the Universe. For that matter it isn't clear that its extension via quantum field theory and quantum chromodynamics result in a consistent theory since they are intrinsically perturbative. In other words, using the precursor to the currently accepted theories in physics as some argument to explain one of the fields of our experience that science by definition cannot explain is stupid. Science is a tool for studying the physical world. If there is some scientific connection between the physical world and what we may refer to as the spiritual world, it certainly hasn't been found using quantum mechanics.

I don't claim to be an expert on spirituality. I don't have certain conclusions on the existance of a god or any of the other questions this field aims to explore. That being said, I am an expert on physics and can assure you that this film is a vast misrepresentation of the currently accepted theories. That is probably why there aren't any famous physicists in the film endorsing these nonsense views.

I saw this movie several years ago when it first came out. It so captivated me then, and still continues to do so now. It was for me very compelling, in offering a completely new way of looking at this universe and our lives in it. Although hard to wrap my head around it's fundamental teaching of a new perspective it has taken me some time to adjust and let it sink in and I'm still working on it, worth it for me to view it over and over again because it's funny and entertaining while being educational explaining as clearly as they can to the non scientific mind how these scientists and , professors now believe they have hit upon a new explanation as to who we are, why are we here, and what we are going to do about it. They don't claim to have all the answers yet ,but have enough documented experiments and findings to suggest for your consideration a shift in thinking they may well be right.

If you take it as a primer on new ideas, it works, not sure about the accuracy of the "science" behind it

So while, I'm sure the "science" behind some of the claims made in this documentary are questionable or edited to make things seem more one way than another, I still find this three-disc set really interesting because, at the very least, it will make people think and question and open their minds to a new ideas. I saw the original theatrical version and the extended version (both included in this set) and it really made me think about how perception might affect one's reality. There was certainly some content that seemed hokey, but the point is to introduce new ideas and viewpoints, and on that level, it succeeds.

That said, there is a definite divide between two schools of thought – science versus perception (by perception I mean how a person's perception shapes his or her reality). I'm somewhere in the middle of these two schools – that while perception and outlook do, in fact, create reality to an extent, the science behind it is very important.

I still don't fully understand quantum physics and some of the experiments discussed in the film, I get the simpler ideas – some of the Dr. Quantum cartoons were interesting. And I appreciated the storyline of the photographer (Marlee Matlin), which intermittently runs between "science" segments and shows some of the ideas in the context of an actual person thrust into considering said ideas. I also appreciated the segment on Dr. Emoto and his water experiments.

The extra discs, which contain interviews and lots of other interesting discussions are, in places, even more interesting than some of the film segments.

I really liked this, not because I believe that science and spirituality have actually reconciled, but because I think that opening oneself up to new concepts, presented in a thought-provoking way, can be beneficial. You can think and decide for yourself.

Pseudoscience to make you join a cult

The writers and directors of this film are part of a cult that believes in a 35,000 year old being called 'Ramtha'. In order to indoctrinate you into their cult, they interview a few fringe PHD's, some grad students, and their cult leader (and even then they take the interviews out of context) about how science has flaws and quantum theories are confusing. FLAWS! SCIENCE! I know, I didn't believe it either. But since science is flawed and some of the theories about the nature of matter at a quantum level are pretty out there and confusing, these jackasses used those holes to insert their own wacky theories about reality, ostensibly to lead you to Ramtha. I think they're also tied into the Indigo children cult. At least for a change these filmmakers belong to a cult other than Scientology.

A rare gem of a film that is worthy of watching again and again!

I first encountered this documentary more than 10 years ago and at that time found it to be almost incomprehensible. So much information! The film is densely packed a fair amount of complex science (i.e., quantum physics and biochemistry), all of which leads to a profound convergence of science and consciousness. Thankfully, the science and philosophy are beautifully brought to human terms by Marlee Matlin whose backstory illustrates the main points of the documentary. This is an amazing film. The only reason I give it four stars (which to me is very good, by the way) is because you may need to watch it more than once or twice before a lot of information and the messaging in the film really starts to sink it. I have probably watched it 25 times over the years. I am sure I will watch it again.
