Update: Dr. Hofve offered to make the PDF version of the book available to me so that I can view the charts and graphs. I truly appreciate her making this offer and since I will be able to see the charts and graphs. They are also working on a solution to this problem that had not presented itself prior to publishing the Kindle version. The book has very valuable information and I appreciate your taking the time to respond and help. Thank you, Dr. Hofve!
If you do want to understand how to evaluate different foods, there is an in-depth discussion of the plusses and minuses of different food options, and an in-depth breakdown of how to read food labels and what type of criteria to use in selecting a diet based on commercially available foods. If you are really hard-core and want to make your own raw diet for your cats, there are recipes and instructions on how to do that too.
There's also a lot of other practical advice on things like how frequently to feed, how much to feed, even the type of dishes to use.
Like I said, I think this book is great for any cat owner that is at all concerned about doing right by their cat in terms of nutrition. And the book gets right down to the point. No messing around. You can pretty much read this book from cover to cover within a couple of hours.
We have been learning that not only have we been over feeding, but we have been feeding them the wrong foods entirely. We stopped buying the Purina crunchies after reading the label and following Dr. Hofve's advice have bought a different brand of dry food. The cats love it BUT love it far less than they loved the Purina. The difference in the food is what is used to make it and we were embarrassed to learn how wrong we were.
A bit more than a year ago we went completely "Paleo" in our food, eating entirely like cavemen. The difference in OUR health has been remarkable. Of course cats are meat eaters...pure carnvores. We were embarrassed to finally realize that if WE were going to eat like cavemen with commensurate health benefits, why would we subject our cats to a diet that was simply not good for them for the benefit of a major corporation whose only interest is its bottom line? So we have changed our cats' diets completely.
Yes, the new dry cat food is considerably more expensive than the store-bought junk. But the big surprise is the cats are much more satisfied with less of it! Oh, and the wet catfood we have been buying? Well, we are phasing that out and with Dr. Hofve's recipes are beginning to make our own wet catfood that will be far better for our feline friends than the store bought stuff.
If you love your feline "children" as much as my wife and I do, you will buy this book, read it and be amazed. Then you too, will want to tell as many cat lovers as possible about "What Cats Should Eat....."
