What to Do If a Bird Flies in the House

HOW TO GET A STUCK RING OFF
Rings on your fingers, bells on your toes … . Although bells on your toes may cause you more problems in the long run (you’re a real killjoy at surprise parties, aren’t you?), that ring on your finger can be tricky too. Oh, it’s swell when it’s on—it’s just when you try to take it off that things can get sticky. Here’s how to get a ring unstuck:
1. Don’t try to force the ring off, since this may just make your finger swell more. Instead, raise your hand to eye level. Then wrap some ice in a washcloth or a couple of paper towels and hold it around the finger the ring’s on. This should reduce the swelling and help you get the thing off.
2. If the ring still won’t budge, run your hands under cold water, soap them up, and rub above and below the ring. Then twist the ring like you’re unscrewing it instead of just pulling it straight off.

This book was a fun idea, but really was a disappointment. Most of the topics fall into fall into the categories of 1) things most people already know, 2) things that are just common sense, 3) things that are too complicated to explain in 2 or 3 pages, or 4) things you can easily look up if you eventually need to know them. Oh, and then there were things that you probably won't remember how to do at the time you'd need to do them--for example, how to jump a car battery. Really, you need more than a few pages of instructions to improve your credit score. Also, be aware that the writing tone here is like reading an article in Cosmopolitan magazine. Some of the topics were not well explained. For instance, I still don't understand horse betting odds after reading the article about horse racing in this book. This book seemed like it would be fun and informative, but in the end I think you'd do just as well to look up information on the Internet, in cookbooks, in your car owner's manual, etc.

...or you'll never get your friends out of there. I made that mistake at a recent "girls' night," and my friends couldn't stop reading it! So I thought I would share the news that this book is not only cute and fun, but very handy as well!

I passed it out at a shower over the weekend to my girlfriends and they loved it! Good practical stuff as well as some fun suprises. My great aunt also chuckled over the topics.

I found this adorable, helpful book while browsing for a gift for a newly-single friend, and I found myself reading it every time I went to her house. Of course, I ended up buying it for myself--it has incredibly useful instructions for little chores you wish you knew how to do, from entertaining (choosing wine, setting a table, cooking an artichoke) to cosmetics (trimming your own bangs, tweezing your eyebrows) to safety.

I loved this book because so many of the how-to's were things I really should know! (Somehow I got to 29 without knowing how to set a table correctly.) Now I might actually order lobster in a restaurant b/c I will know what to do with it! This is definitely the kind of book I fully expect to refer to several times in the future. Will buy more as gifts for sure b/c it's a good price.

Guys will like this book too! Lots of
useful info, from how to carve a turkey to how to sell
your car to how to prevent jet lag. The authors have
boiled down the instructions into a few easy, simple
steps.

At 21, I really could have used this book! At a much older and wiser age 39, I've also learned a few things: "How to get red wine out of rug" (p. 135) worked perfectly; and "How to avoid getting a speeding ticket" (p.10) came in handy during a recent cross-country drive. From social skills, like how to choose the right wine or write a condolence note, to practical financial advice (especially how not to get ripped off by an auto mechanic - every female's worst nightmare), this book is a great guide for everyone. I'm giving it to my niece, the college graduate, to give her a headstart on the things I wish I'd known years ago!

This is GREAT! Well, done! Brava!!!
I wish I had read this book earlier, for many reasons! One, because it will make a fabulous gift for my friends, mom, aunts, etc. And also because it has some really practical advice for dilemmas I have found myself in! I definitely recommend this book, for yourself or as a gift for the women in your life!
