After rescuing a puppy 21 years ago, Diane Rose-Solomon became increasingly involved in animal rescue and education and served for years on the board of directors of a small grass roots animal rescue and aid organization. In 2009 to give back more to the animal community, she became a Certified Humane Education Specialist through Humane Society University. She then combined her humane and creative interests and published her first two books, award winning JJ the American Street Dog, and How He Came to Live in Our House and the sequel JJ Goes to Puppy Class." What to Expect When Adopting a Dog, her latest book, is a guide to successful dog adoption for every family. The book answers questions like whether dog adoption is right for you, how to adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue group, how to pre¬pare your home for a new member, integrating the dog into your home, family, lifestyle, and more. In five modules, Diane leads the reader through the steps they should take to decide on a dog, then through the adoption process, as well as life¬long care. After rescuing a puppy 21 years ago, Diane Rose-Solomon became involved in animal rescue and education, serving for years on the board of directors of a small grassroots organization, the Animal Guardian Society. To give back more to the animal community, she became a Certified Humane Education Specialist through Humane Society University in 2009. She then combined her humane and creative interests by publishing her first two books, award-winning JJ the American Street Dog, and How He Came to Live in Our House and the sequel JJ Goes to Puppy Class.

Diane enjoys reading her stories to children in schools, libraries and shelter programs. Her goal is to educate children and adults about how compassion extends to all beings, human and animal. To this end, she founded Team Kindness, a program where children, families and teachers learn about and engage in kind and humane educational activities.

Her newest nonfiction title, What to Expect When Adopting a Dog is available as of September 2016. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, two children and two rescued dogs.

I did not expect to learn so much from "What To Expect When Adopting A Dog"!! I have been the happy parent to many dogs over the past 35 years and thought I knew pretty much all I needed to know. Not so! Diane's book is full of such useful and current information that I bought an extra copy to give to a friend who is going to be adopting very soon. I thought I could supply all of the answers my friend had regarding adopting a new dog, but after I read this, I realized that there was a LOT I didn't know. The book is put together so clearly and is very easy to read and follow. I really enjoyed the little side stories that Diane included about her own dog adopting experiences, as well as contributions from many wonderful experts in the pet and rescue industry. Any topic and need you might run into while beginning the process of dog adopting is covered in this book, along with excellent links and resources listed for further follow up if you are interested. I also enjoyed learning some new fun terms that I was not aware of: counter surfing and foster failure!! I won't give them away, you have to read the book to find out what they mean! I can't recommend this book highly enough!

I just finished reading this book and as a former shelter worker of twenty years, I wish this book could be made available to every adopter and be required reading! It will answer so many questions that adopters have before adopting, after adopting and for the years they spend with their furry family member. This book will help those 'honeymoon period' couple of weeks go smoothly but after reading the book adoptive 'parents' will also know what to do after that honeymoon period ends and everyday life sets in. It's obvious that Diane has lived through many of the situations mentioned in the book and that she, and the experts she contacted and quotes, want to make it easier for new pet parents as they have some of the same situations occur. I'd recommend this book for anyone considering adopting a dog, even if this isn't the first time you've adopted.

I've been recommending this book to all my friends who have adopted a dog or are thinking about adopting. They love it! It is a comprehensive guide to everything you need. It is in such an easy to read format, that really teaches you what to expect! But this amazing book isn't just for people adopting a dog, but for anyone who brings a new puppy into their home. At first, I purchased the soft cover book, but now I think I want all the helpful website links, so I am going back to Amazon and purchasing the electronic version for a reduced $1.99 (available when you already purchased the book).

Ms. Rose-Solomon's is also the author of the beloved children books about adopting a puppy - my boys' favorite is, "JJ, the American Street Dog." We've read it a million times!

I thought I bought a book on how to choose the right dog for you and your family. This book was about everything else. Lots of links to interesting looking articles on petfinder and at times it sounded like a commercial for dog products but nothing about how to choose a dog. Shouldn't that be the most important thing about adopting? When you walk in a shelter overflowing with the deafening barks of dogs who all need a home it can be very overwhelming. The only thing the book says is to take suggestions from the shelter staff and wait for something to click inside you. Dog ownership is a 15-20 year commitment and the book (about successful dog adoption) is over 200 pages. Did I expect too much?
