There are a lot of question here that are never answered. How did Mr. Crisp end up with this girl? What she endures is heart breaking, but you never get to connect with her, or even find a reason other than her brutal rape to cheer her on. It's this lack of detail that ruin the novel. Maybe that was the goal. Just focus on her revenge for the hell that she endured, but it doesn't make for a good story. It's just violence, but there's nothing else. I love splatterpunk, but this was just okay. Nothing here to really like and by the halfway point I started to lose interest. When I read a book I want a reason to keep reading. I want to know who the characters are, I want to feel some kind of connection.
What Good Girls Do is a violent, shocking novel you read, and then forget about. If you like violence well, there's plenty of that here, but if you're reading this for a decent plot, then you may want to go elsewhere. Maybe I'm one of the few who just fail to see the brilliance in Butcher's novel, but I don't think so. It'll be interesting to see what other's say about this book and get their take on it. For me, it's just an okay book. Nothing special about this one, and easily forgettable.
Don't read it based on my suggestion. Mostly because I don't need those emails from unsuspecting victims. Do your research. Study the book. Consider it. And take the plunge if you think you're ready. But take the trip on your own legs. You're going to need them.
Good horror, good books make you NEED to finish the story ASAP and this one does that for sure. Jonathan Butcher is a ludicrously talented writer and I promise you will be seeing big things from him.
